21 Jump Street Pilot - What song is this?

Hey guys, I was checking out the pilot of tv series "21 Jump Street"

and there was that song which starts @ 0:45 into the clip.

Does anyone know what song it is? At some points it reminds me of

Jermaine Stewart but I don't think it's him. I think it's called "It's

not easy being me / mean". smile

I don't know who this is, but I think this show used imitation cover songs. I know Knight Rider did. It was cheaper for the TV shows to have session singers and musicians re-record music than to use the original songs. Some programs like Miami Vice used the original performer. This song might also be something written and recorded specifically for 21 Jump Street, and not an actual record.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I checked the track lists of the soundtracks but no luck so far, and what makes it extra difficult to find is because of some explanations of youtubers in the comments:

"...What is going on with the music when Hansen is getting his makeover? I still have original tape recorded from tv and the song was Steve Winwood - "Back In The High Life Again" ???..."

"...The scene w/Tom and Judy originally had "Back in the High Life Again" by Steve Winwood, which was a great song. If they only paid for the rights to one episode, it should've been the pilot..."

So i guess that the newjack-swingbeat track has been added to the pilot-episode which came out on dvd? The keyboards and synths remind me of Chuckii Booker's jams.

If this is the case, then the publishers and/or record company of Steve's song were asking for too much money, so public domain music was probably added to the DVDs of the show. Which could be anybody.
