DJ Hollywood - Shock Shock The House Got my current issue of Wax Poetics today & was readin the Kurtis Blow piece (fun article, btw).
They mentioned Hollywood & it reminded me to pull this sucka up & give it a spin...
From a time when hip-hop was just F-U-N.
From '80...good times

Innit tho?
My first response was to laugh a lil bit at the archaic "braggadocio / call & response" thang that was so tre chic at the time......
but that bass & Hollywood's charisma snapped my ass back to reality Funk Is It's Own Reward | |

and NO substitute for "call & response" in the live setting either. Without it, hell, I don't even consider it much of a show.
Check out the crowd on "Dr. Funkenstein" (from the Parliament "Live" album)...or maybe the live version of Rick's "Mary Jane" from 1981 @ the Forum. Yeah...like THAT.
no sub for that. Like I said, my early memories of those first (actual) mix tapes with what we then called "rappin" were just of pure fun. Somehow (I know how...ugh) a lot of that has been lost in the genre.
