Y'all must not think very highly of yourselves if you believe that every black women who lightens her hair is trying to look white.

I'm tired of that argument. White women lighten their hair. Spanish women lighten their hair. Asin women lighten their hair. WOMEN lighten their hair. Ya know?

rolleyes Oh please, nobody here thinks highly of themselves, its called expressing an opinion, ever heard of that? confused What's really tired is people criticizing or bashing others for expressing an idea or thought. Some think Ciara's blonde hair is pretty, some think its no big deal, some think she's trying to fit in with the standard Hollwood ideal of beauty. How about everyone just agree to disagree. There are no right or wrong posts in this thread only different points of view.

AGREE

If people really took this fact and drilled it in their head while typing their would be LESS online arguements...

I understand the point being made, but hair is just hair isn't it? Going dark, brown or natural works for some but not every one. For some women, blonde, dark, brown and natural ALL can work for them. Some women look better with short hair, some look better with long hair. If an African American woman decides to go blonde, it doesn't necessarily mean she is going for the "european look"...for some that may be the objective, but not all the time. A similar argument that is common is how folks like to say African American women who still get relaxers are trying to be "white" instead of embracing their natural curls. Urgh. That's a whole other thread for another day.

As far as Ciara goes, when I first saw the pics, I felt she looked beautiful. I didn't mistake her Beyawnce nor thought of her. IMO, Ciara's hair looks more natural than Bey's blonde weaves/wigs. She just looks different..albeit, still beautiful.

[Edited 6/6/12 7:11am]

I agree with this post. I also said the same thing but in a smaller statement. Some black women dont have this in mind when they change their hair color or straighten their hair etc... However the standard in hollywood as far as African American beauty goes is fair skin/light skin and blonde hair... Now just because some women choose to wear blonde hair doesnt necessarily mean their feeding into the standard but obviously alot of African American women in the spotlight do..

This particular way of thinking is very subconscious because this is what we have been taught since the beginning of time

Maybe your right... Ciara isnt necessarily feeding into the stereotype of Black beauty but whether she is or isnt I still dont think the blonde hair is all that appealing on her skin. I think a darker color would bring her features and skin complexion out more....

People who dont what to acknowledge the poision in how black women are portrayed in the media are just on some bullshit, Im not about that life .. Not saying you are Missfee cause ur one of the realest posters around but just saying...lol

I don't get it, man. The black community, supposedly, wants to present this image of being strong, independent, individuals who don't fit the stereotypes people have been trying to shove them into for the last however many years. But somebody lightens their hair and all of a sudden their own people turn on them because they're trying to be "white". Can people really not see the ironic self-loathing in that?

I'm not sure what that means, honestly. But I have no problem with the truth or discussing difficult issues, so long as people can keep it intelligent and civil. And its far past time that these type of things were discussed at the org in that manner. Its been OK for the black members here to discuss, makes jokes and insult white people for years (pretty much on a daily basis), but if a white member ventures near any of that territory people's heads start exploding. Its nonsense. If I see something I don't agree with I'm going to comment on it, simple as that. If the only way people can respond is to attack, well, that basically proves me right and I walk away.

I dont think that poster was attacking you but your kinda contradicting yourself. If you have a right to express your opinion so does others whether you agree or disagree you. Everyone who had criticism on Ciaras "new look" dont have a problem with themselves as you were implying. confused

I'm pretty sure I never claimed I was being attacked.

I was expressing my opinion, which according to what's been posted in this thread should be perfectly acceptable. Right?

And apparently some of you are wholly and completely unaware of how many benign comments such as the ones made in this thread, but going the other direction, have been turned into huge, angry throwdowns. There is a double standard at the org where one set of people feel they should be able to say whatever they want but don't want the other set of people to have that same option. Has been for a long ass time.

The problem with Ciara isn't her looks. It never was. The problem with Ciara is lame ass tracks and a weak voice. Her team seemed to have learned nothing from her success with Promise. They have been screwing up ever since. Its simple: when you have a thin-voiced or small-ranged vocalist, you need STRONG TRACKS. Janet and Britney have laid the blueprint out for this. You can't put garbage ass beats behind a thin voice, it doesn't work. Her songs need to all be either fast with heavy bottom or slow with heavy bottom; no mid tempo songs and no techno tracks. I assume that's the "new" direction she's going to go in. A lot of pop R&B chicks with minimal vocal abilities or thin voices transition into dance divas. Its career suicide.

You definitly implied that you were being attacked just because someone responded to a judgemental comment you made. You even stated it: If the only way people can respond is to attack, well, that basically proves me right and I walk away ~Cerebus.

There is nothing wrong with you expressing your opinion. If you dont have an issue with Ciaras hair than ....so be it. lol

But I think its overly judgemental to imply that people have issue with themselves because they dont like her hair..lol I guess that is an opinion as well but its very judgemental because the same thing can be easily said about people who like her hair. Their just opinions.. I feel people shouldnt be labeled a certain way just because of their opinion...

I agree with that double standard as well as some people here feel they have a non-existent superior status because theyve been here longer or they feel they know more about music or whatever ... but in this particular situation I dont know why you would feel this way when no one really criticised you for your opinion on Ciaras hair.

Lots of black folk have objections to black artists who start out in the black community suddenly "whitewashing" themselves.

It looks like an attempt at cultural detachment. It looks like ahe "abandoned her roots" (pun intended). lol

Ciara looks nice (the outfit and her figure) but I have to get this off my chest... WHY DO THESE BLACK WOMEN DYE THEIR DAMN HAIR BLONDE?? Like WTF? eek

Its nothing appealing or attractive about it at all. Its tired and makes them look old with that trying to look white/European look. She would look so much prettier with black or brown hair.

She looks nice but I TOTALLY AGREE! UGH.... I hate the blonde hair, it doesnt look good on everyone, it just doesnt! I wish blacks, latinas & asians could embrace natural hair colors, there's no probelm with dying it but why does it automatically have to mean "you're hotter" when you go blonde?

I've always thought Ciara looked pretty with black hair and she doesnt need to get skinnier, she looks great already but we all know how it is in Hollywood, the skinnier the better.

The problem is that when you have an image embedded in your mind because of the culture you live in, it makes the situation controversial. You want to be part of the general culture yet remain true to your roots/ cultural background so what happens is that; you want to be proud of who you are yet there's a sense of also wanting to fit into the larger group of people. Since being blonde or lightskinned/ fair skinned sadly to this day means you're more attractive, it causes problem, because while you are proud of who you are, you are still changing yourself into something that is the standard of beauty in many countries around the world. Dont know if what I wrote made sense...

It makes perfect sense. And its nothing new. Bias towards light/fair skin has been around since slavery. It's sad to say, but when a black artist wants to crossover, they have to play the part. Beyonce knew she couldn't keep rolling her neck and whatnot and have dark hair if she wanted to be a "pop" artist. And Clive Davis knew what he had to do in order to make Whitney crossover.

It's said, but it's the society we live in.
