Virtual Elvis Presley Coming Soon

June 6, 2012

Elvis Presley is gone, but fans will get to see the King of Rock 'n' Roll again soon in all his 3D glory thanks to the same technology company that brought us the much-talked about hologram of the late rapper Tupac Shakur.

Digital Domain Media Group, which created the virtual Tupac that debuted last April at California's Coachella festival, has announced a partnership with the company that owns the rights to Presley's likeness that will result in the production of a holographic Elvis for use in film, on TV and in other entertainment events, such as concerts.

"His lifelong fans will be thrilled all over again, and new audiences will discover the electric experience of Elvis the performer," says Elvis Presley Enterprises president Jack Soden in a statement.

"We are thrilled to have been chosen to bring new performances and original shows where fans can have their own, new experiences of Elvis," Digital Domain Media Group chairman and CEO John Textor adds. "This agreement enables us to participate in the success of any number of potential virtual Elvis appearances."

Digital Domain is a visual-effects company that has created effects for numerous movies, including The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and X-Men: First Class.

The company expects to reveal soon when and where the holographic Elvis will debut.

Which Elvis will they use - the young, leather jacket wearing Elvis or the bloated, gravy-sweating Vegas Elvis?

I remember years ago, it was announced there was going to be a new movie starring a computer generated Bruce Lee. Nothing became of it. As far as Elvis goes, what would be the difference between this and the Elvis tour from a few years ago with the original members of his 1970's band playing live.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

The "fresh out of the movies and making a new start 1968-1972" Elvis.

People would do anything for a money grab. If Elvis' folks really cared, they'd put a stop to this.

They have done it with Marilyn Monroe in a perfume ad. Didn't they do a superbowl commercial with Elvis? I forget what it was but it was kinda cool. I always thought they should do an Elvis cartoon with him in concert. There is so much concerts available and if was done tastefully it would work nicely.

There is tons of unrealeased(most of it is available on bootleg VHS/DVD's in fair to good) footage of 68 Comeback, That's The Way It Is and Elvis On Tour. If they do it right it would be cool. I'd rather get a Blu-ray of unrealesed footage. Only Elvis On Tour is on Blu-ray, but no additional footage. I'd like to see Elvis The Lost Performance on BD/DVD.

That's actually the real Elvis--he never died but was rejuvenated.
