I'm not claiming them as "the best", but since someone could basically build a funk collection off the artists listed in this thread I wanted to include...
Brass Construction - for the mostly instrumental, longform dance joints. Funky as all get out.
I was going to say Brothers Johnson, too, but Greycap took care of that one.
Right. How could i forget. I jam a few of their releases from time to time.

Very underrated IMO. You can drop a needle on one their tracks and even the wallflowers start twitchin'.
Are they really considered just a "Funk" band? They spanned several genres like Disco, Jazz, and traditional R&B.
I think they are more Funk that Rufus and Chaka were. Rufus had even more elements going on than EW&F. Rufus was R&B, Pop, Rock, Disco, Country, Jazzy. They had some elements of Funk sprinkled in here and there but by no means would I consider them a Funk band. I've heard way more funky songs from EW&F. Someone mentioned Rufus earlier. And I know a lot of people do associate Rufus and even Chaka as a solo artist as Funk. I'm the biggest Chakaholic in the world. Been a fan for 36 years and I just don't hear a lot of Funk in their music.

I think people just say that EWF weren't funk because they had a universal sound
but you are crazy if you don't consider songs like Mighty Mighty, Yearnin Learnin,
Kalimba Story, Magic Mind, and Jupiter funk. It's a live version of Magic Mind on
one of their live albums where the horns are fucking killer. The horns alone would
make the track funky.

will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.
Studio wise, the Time was Prince and some of his band and Morris. And since they were only around sporadically, they don't get that big of a mention.
But you know, I have to say the entire P-Funk collective was and is the best band when it comes to THE FUNK so that's basically it. I would've said the JB's were the best but some of them went to P-Funk.
I already said earlier that I am aware that "The Time" was all Prince in the studio. I'm talking about live on stage. When I saw their reunion in Vegas a few years ago & the recent one late last year. It confirmed to me that no other funk band can touch them live.

Right! No arguement here. EW&F provided some of the best funk of the 70's and 80s. And yes, those horns. That's why I consider them a funk band. They used a lot on horns and horns are a fundamental part of good Funk!

no argument KB about the "some of" & fundamentals....but I'm with Tim & Gray on this one...EWF is my fave band PERIOD...but I never regarded them as a straight-up funk troop.
Yeah, funky horns still don't make them a "funk" band. Funk to me got to have more stank than that. EW&F were too polished. One of the greatest bands of all time but let's be for real here.

The general public doesn't know that though.
You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
Now as for who do i think is the number one funkiest group of all time. I would have to go with James Brown (with the many members of the JB's ). In second place it would be George Clinton (with his Pfunk collective) the third would be Prince and the fourth would be the Isley Brothers
