I think it depends also. Sometimes artists are playing the same chords or melody but they add their own spice to it. Then you have some who challenge the other to see who plays the same melody better.

Mostly when I've seen a "duel" in this regard, the chords(?) or melodies seem the same at first, but then as they become more complex its difficult to know if both instruments are playing the same chords, especially if its two different instruments.
