Lauryn Hill pleads guilty in NJ to tax charges

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Eight-time Grammy-winning singer Lauryn Hill has pleaded guilty in New Jersey to not paying her taxes.

Hill was charged this month with three counts of failing to file tax returns on more than $1.5 million earned from 2005 to 2007.

Hill appeared in U.S. District Court in Newark on Friday and admitted not filing taxes for all three years. She faces a maximum one-year sentence on each count.

The 37-year-old South Orange resident got her start with The Fugees and began her solo career in 1998 with the critically acclaimed album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill."

She then largely disappeared from public view to raise her six children, five of whom she had with Rohan Marley, the son of famed reggae singer Bob Marley

Great we have to wait even longer for an album. Poor girl, maybe jail might help her come to terms with her life.

I guess she couldn't pay. What a disaster on so many levels. sad All those kids complete w/ young baby, their daddy wanting to marry another woman, and now a Fed offence involving the IRS? Her ability to travel (ie affecting her future career) and vote are just poof now. eek

Hopefully she avoided jail time.

I've lost hope that she will ever come up with a new album. She's been on the crazy bus for too long and now she's the driver. She's on tumblr talking about all the oppression, sexism, racism, ageism, ableism, and other isms in the industry, which I can understand she must be facing but after reading all of her eloquently written words I was left wondering what any of that had to do with her paying her taxes. You live in this country you have to follow major laws if you don't they're coming for you if they can find you. Hell even Jesus paid his damn taxes to Caesar, didn't she read that in the Bible she is always preaching to us from in her music? Someone needs to revoke her crazy bus driver's license. Relax Ms. Hill, I have love for you, but I'm not going to support the jackassery.

1 year? From what I've heard, she can be in prison for up to 3 YEARS! I hope thats not the case, but maybe she can self evaluate herself while in prison. But she isn't that crazy. Guess this once again delays a new album. oh well

I read the news report... it said she was charged with I think with three counts that each leads up to a year in prison so technically they were saying 3 years. This reminds of when they said Ron Isley was gonna serve 37 months, it was actually 3 years too.

She plead guilty so the IRS will probably set up a payment plan if they are not demanding ALL of the money up-front...As long as Lauryn pleads to the judge that she's doing shows or whatever to raise the money the Attorneys for the IRS will probably work with her...I said PROBABLY...It is a known fact that the IRS is tougher on Black Celebs...No mercy...

Lauryn is in that Mix of Great female Artists that probably won't have a huge Legacy of music...She's had 2 very successful Careers and made enough money to lay low and start a family...

When she's done with this IRS thing I'd like for her to talk with Producers @ HBO and create a Drama/Comedy..I want her to go back to her acting roots and do some side-singing-gigs when she feels like it......I just don't know if she HATES having a routine or if it is impossible for her to be disciplined....

^ Hmm that'll probably go against her principles? She probably just hold off releasing the new album until next year.

I think because she thinks she's portraying this "no nonsense badass" type woman when really she comes off as looking like she's koo-koo for cocoa puffs. shrug

Boo boo Lauryn i love you to death... but when people play on your album YOU PAY THEM... NOT GOD lol

lol very sad really. It amazes me how folks have one big album and then just stop and think they can return 10 yrs later and people will still care. Besides Prince, Madonna and Maxwell, I don't think anyone else could get away with it.
