Do People Listen To Certain Artists For The Right Reasons?

What i mean is, do some people really get the artist's message or do they do it to be cool?

I think 2 of the biggest examples of this

Tupac & Bob Marley

I can not tell you how many people i knew in middle school & high school who had Marley shirts, but most of the time it was cause it was like ''ahh he smoke that weed he be koo''

And lot's of people... especially younger just see that about him. They don't know about his political lyrics or what he was doing at the time. Hell they just think it's music to smoke to lol

And tupac, don't even get me started! i see so many people with Tupac shirts. And are all about Tupac, but most of them only know a few songs or only love him for his ''thug life'' talks lol

It seems people will like or quote these artists to seem cool, but will never listen to a cd or if they do know songs songs... don't get what the artist's music was all about.

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

All music is shit music and no music is real- gunsnhalen

I know folks who claimed they loved Marvin and Stevie to death but only listened to radio hits of theirs. People think all they were were "socially conscious rock stars of the '70s" when both existed long before that and Marvin's career was all over the board as was Stevie's.

Depend on who you ask, 2pac is on demigod status like Michael Jackson is.

As for Bob, I agree. Some people like the music of Bob Marley AND Peter Tosh because it's perfect background noise for weed ! nod

Pssh i would rather people know that lol

A lot of folks i know think Stevie is a love song guy, i tell him his political songs are up there with Bob Dylan and they are like confused cause they don't know a hit like Living For The City or Heaven Help Us All.

What I've encountered where I work, are kids who wear tee shirts that they think look cool, but don't know know anything about the artists on the front. Usually, it's Jimi Hendrix.

Since Jimi is my favorite artist, I'll ask kids if they listen to him.

On Saturday, a boy said, "I never heard his music, but I do know that he's a crackhead who choked on his own vomit." omg

A while back, another boy told me: "I don't listen to that shit." disbelief

"Love Hurts.
Your lies, they cut me.
Now your words don't mean a thing.
I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..."

OMG lol Jimi is part of what we called the ''poser pack'' back in High School & Middle School razz

And there was 2 category of shirts that showed

The classic rock shirts ala Pink Flyd, Hendrix or The Doors

The metal ala Metallica, Iron Maiden,, AC/DC

So many people had these shirts and half of them knew 1 or 2 songs... or didn't even listen to it lol

An airhead cheerleader i knew had a rolling stones shirt for the longest time... not knowing it was them she just liked the tongue? lol

Idk.. personally i would never wear of shirt of something i didn't like or listen to.

The other tee shirt that I see students wearing is Che Guevara... Ask them who he was, or what he stood for and you get eek

Exactly! If Im going to buy a shirt of someone its going to be of someone I know! lol That shit is so annoying.

Most teens and young adults just listen to what is popular at the moment to be cool or because of a catchy beat.

And of course for obvious other reasons such as attractiveness, style, race, genre of music, lyrical content, brand an artist may market, etc.

When I was going to high school, there were these kids who would only listen to obscure underground bands that sell 150 copies of their records and don't get any radio play. Everything on the radio/MTV was commercial junk to them. If such an act happens to all of a sudden catch on in the mainstream and become popular, these people would say they "sold out" and quit listening to them. They'd criticize folks who just "jumped on the bandwagon", when they were listening to the acts from the beginning when nobody cared. They wouldn't like for their favorite singer/group to sign with a major label.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

My best friend was/is like that.

He would be quick to say stuff like:

rolleyes "I saw them play in the back of McDonald's back in '85..." or "I can't believe you're just hearing them now. We used to chill with them in the park 6 years ago..."

Even at 45, he'll still try to tell you how bands from other countries were much cooler before they caught on here.
