Oasis Jacking Stevie, T-Rex & A Coca Cola Commercial?

To me, i as a fan if Oasis. Always wondered about there ''borrowing''

To me it was part of there twisted humor by putting other song rifts or chorus as part of the original...

Of course Don't Look Back In Anger has a very similar intro to Imagine by Lennon,

Do you think this is legit jacking? or is it kind of more along the lines. Of when folk singers would borrow from others, like how Bob Dylan & others did from time to time. Or is this just stealing?

It seem's the Oasis bro's ackoledge some of them to lol

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Yeah, I know what you mean. I think that it's because Noel wrote songs very quickly and spontaneously when he was starting out, and didn't care if he sounded a bit (or a lot) like someone elses tune.

Of 'Cigarettes and Alcohol' (the one that rips off 'Bang a Gong'/'Get it On'), he said something like 'I thought it was only ever going to be heard by 15 people At the Boardwalk in Manchester.

To digress slightly, I think that Oasis' knack of writing songs that sounded strangely 'familiar' might have been the secret of their success.

Check out this send up of 'Shakermaker' by Oasis tibute 'No Way Sis', which I think made the UK top 30. The fact that an Oasis tribute act could get on Top of the Pops shows how bloody mssive the oasis phenomenon was in the UK in 1996:

It's been too long since you've had your ass kicked properly:

Weird, I was kind of thinking about this yesterday and was wondering if all of the accusations of thievery had anything to do with the fall off in Noel's songwriting. I don't know, maybe he was "ripping off" songs throughout his whole career but most of the accusations that I have heard are from the early days (basically the nineties). Maybe in trying to be careful not to pinch stuff from others his songwriting suffered?

The "borrowing" never bothered me. That type of thing has always happened in music. Besides, any rock band that openly "steals" from Wham is ok by me:

That one sounds iffy... but i can see the comparison wink

But hey! at least lyrically Noel is no hack. Borrow or not... he at least wrote some of the best rock song's of the 90's.

Slow down, junior, surely you are not praising Oasis/Noel's lyrics? That's the one area where I think he does deserve criticism. Generally I ignore lyrics as most of them are pretty terrible but Noel has penned some real stinkers with Be Here Now probably being his nadir. There were a few too many Beatles references scattered throughout that album. I love his music but I believe he would have benefitted from having his own Bernie Taupin.
