Prince and Punk Rock

During the early 80s when I got hooked on Prince, I was a fan of a lot of Punk and Post-Punk bands at the same time. Bad Brains, Joy Division, and the Smiths were some of the bands. Anybody else had or still have a passion for Prince and Punk?

I don't know if I'd call the Smiths punk, but I'm definitely with you on the loving Prince while loving what you call punk. Good music is just good music, regardless of the genre.

Right now I'm listening to a bootleg from 1982 and during Bambi the guitar hook sounds like "I'm so bored in the USA" -- remember that song? The Avengers, I think.

So I was just thinking about those punk days and saw this topic...

Oh, of course, it was the Clash. Funny how the replay in my mind sounded different... I could hear that woman singing it.

I love Buzzcocks to death, and well, gotta admit i recently feel in love for anything by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Sex pistols never been a fan. But the Clash and Smith, definitely!
Punk music (real one) is one of the most underated (yet fashionnable these days) music ever!

No, I don't have it. I'll have to check it out though. The Jam rocks! I just saw Paul Weller in Chicago a couple weeks ago...I didn't know many tunes (he only played a few Jam songs) but he rocked as usual. It made me order his new one.

Do note that PhilG listed punk and POST punk. Many acts that were classified as "New Wave" or "Post Modern" were also called "Post Punk". The Smiths definitely fall into this category. Some of my faves Ot the "Post Punk" scene:

Bauhaus
Love & Rockets
The Bolshoi
Siouxsie and the Banshees
Adam Ant
Duran Duran (yes, prior to hitting it big, they were part of the New Romantics movement, a subculture of New Wave/Post Punk)
Tears For Fears (See Above)
Joy Division
New Order
Depeche Mode
Stephen "Tin Tin" Duffy
Public Image Ltd.

I remember back in the day here in L.A., I used stay up late for "Goodnight L.A." an early video show on channel 7(KABC) that showed mostly "New Wave" groups like those above. Anyways this was the only local show that regularly showed Prince videos like Controversy,Sexuality, Dirty Mind, Uptown,1999, Little Red Corvette, and especially Automatic. I remember a clip of Snow White singing "Someday My Prince will Come..." before the Prince video would start.

Y'know, its funny. I was into this scene as well in the 80s, and Prince was one of the few mainstream artists who actually was respected amongst those in the scene. I remeber going to clubs that played all the above acts, and Prince tunes were always mixed in (like you said, especially "Automatic")

Totally agree! But you forgot Minor Threat(Ian McKaye), the Circle Jerks, The Misfits, the Descendents, and Black Flag, no name a few more. Bad Brains kick ass! headbang Just been getting back into all that music I used to listen to again recently. For anyone here who grew up in Mpls., do you remember Blind Approach? Some of the best hard-core punk shows ever!

And what's up with the Smiths/Prince connection. I love the Smiths as well, and it seems like a lot of Prince fans on here do too. I never would have thought.

The best Punk album of the last 10 years has got to be the last Rancid album. Holy shit that album smoked! 22 songs in 39 minutes. Rancid are one of the only punk bands around worth caring about. The Distillers are also excellent whos vocalist is Tim(Rancids) wife.
