HDD: Mayer #1, Adele #2, Carrie #3 As expected John Mayer's album, Born and Raised, sold well over 200,000 copies in its opening week selling over 231,146 copies in a lopsided victory against his closest competitors Adele's 21 and Carrie Underwood's Blown Away. 21, according to HITS calculations had an 11% drop and sold around 53,550, which was enough to keep its position at No. 2. After being dropped to No. 3 last week by American Idol season 8 runner up Adam Lambert's Trespassing, whose No. 1 debut at over 77,000 last week was one of the lowest selling albums to top the chart this year, Underwood's Good Girl remained at No. 3 with sales of 45,074 copies. The group MercyMe's album, Hurt & The Healer is the second new album to debut at the top 5, peaking at No. 4 with sales of 36,963 copies. UK-based boy band One Direction's debut album, Up All Night, remains in the top ten, moving up to No. 5 after sales of 36,248 copies. Rounding out the top ten on HITS' list were Slash's Apocalyptic Love (No. 6, 34,085), Lionel Richie's best-selling Tuskegee album (No. 7, 32,261), Sara Bareilles' Once Upon Another Time (No. 8, 31,455), the Now 42 compilation (No. 9, 30,019) and Norah Jones' Little Broken Hearts (No. 10, 26,296). Lambert's Trespassing took a 70% drop and dropped out of the top ten barely a week after he hit number 1, settling at No. 11 with sales of 23,507.

Pretty surprised by Mayer, the album is very "uncommercial" and with him really unable to tour and promote live, its kind of amazing actually, kind of like the male version of Norah Jones "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

I think why it was bought is because folks love this type of music. This is why Adele sold as well as she did with hers (though her's reach more folks). It's like they're trying to tell the industry where to go and folks are confused as to where.

Adele is just living at number 2 now isnt she? The Most Important Thing In Life Is Sincerity....Once You Can Fake That, You Can Fake Anything.

I don't think she's leaving that #2. She notched her 23rd week there. She's closing in on Bruuuuce for the top record. She's got a special next week so that may bring her back to number one since I don't recall no album by no top star or a past top selling star being released so she'll pull in another 100K.

Lionel is holding up pretty well. Totally shitting on his fellow 80s icon's recent efforts by Prince & Madonna. Go figure.
