Is Lauryn Hill the only the female rapper to top the U.s charts unaccompanied? I know Missy's Work It peaked at 2 and Nicki's Super Bass peaked at 3 sooo........ anybody know?

Yeah. I don't think MC Lyte or Queen Latifah top the charts on the Hot 100 if that's what you meant.

I know they didn't (expecially Queen Latifah) but I thought maybe there might have been some female rapper who made 1 big song or something. BTW is it sad that I know Queen Latifah as a movie star and I didn't know she rapped until I came on this site

Aw. Well at least you found out lol.

I always thought Queen Latifah sounded like a rap name

And that's exactly what it is.

Stevie always performing at these award shows. He's like "Y'all mofo's aint forgettin' about me" .
I'm happy that people are appreciating Stevie though. With the way our legends are going, we really should honor those like Stevie while they are still here and around to enjoy and appreciate it. Yea I know but at the same time they need to be giving the tributes... They like to tribute them when their long gone. Let the kids/teens know who really paved the way and give props where its dued instead of promoting foolishness...

MC Lyte had four unaccompanied number ones ("Paper Thin", "Cha Cha Cha", "Poor Georgie", "Ruffneck") on the US Rap chart. Neneh Cherry had a number one on the US Dance chart with "Buffalo Stance".

I wonder if the OP meant the Hot 100 but yeah you're right. I need to check if Latifah ever had a number-one on the rap charts.

I was referring to hot 100, so so far Lauryn's the only topper.

I figured you was. | |

As a big Lauryn fan... i always wondered what it was that made Doo-Wop catch on so quick.
I mean grant it it's nowhere near my favorite on the album, but it's a damn good song but still it went number 1 in the first week it was released! how did it get that type of buzz so quick?
I mean all Lauryn had done before that was The Fugees, The Score was big. But still.......
What made this song so big that it went number 1 so fast? Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

She needs to start using her real name more often That whole 1990's Afrocentric era is over and to be 50 or 60 being Queen Latifah is humorous Ice T can get away with it. But she is very big in Pop Culture and just doing things so different now. Dana Owens works

I think the song was real catchy. Catchy songs always grab people's attention.

I think it was the wide audience it could appeal to. It was a good combo of Classic R&B, Neo-R&B, Hip-Hop, and somewhat Pop.

Pretty much. | |

I think Da Brat was the first female to hit the top spot solo on the POP charts with Funkdafied but with DuPri and likely the producer, (on the "ad libs" too I think) does that count as "unaccompanied?"

I don't think Dupri was credited as a vocalist. It was #6 pop, #2 R&B and #1 rap.
