Oh, so drugs just popped up in the 70's? Hell, many of Davies contemporaries didn't make it to see the 60's. Miles Davis was born an asshole and he died an asshole... not a good person by any stretch of the imaganation. But if you listened to his discography and the only information you had were the liner notes... then you'd speak only of his brilliance as a musician. To say forthright that the personal is naturally connected to the political, is rubbish. People have a tendency to bring up the personal when they can't refute or discredit achievement. As the saying goes, "People who live in glass houses........" On the other hand American has reduced its intellectual discourse to the level of a 1930's Hollywood movie.

Shit Miles was blown out on heroin back in the '50s, it didn't stop him from revolutionizing jazz...

Well yeah... less get real here. Look, I'm not saying anyone has to like or dislike anything just because. What I do object to is Marsalis and his camp thinking they are some how the judge of what is Jazz music is or isn't. Marsalis has added ZERO to the lexicon of Jazz music... in terms of composing/playing. When you tell me Bill Evans wasn't a Jazz musician, you don't know your butthole from a hole in the ground or you have some personal issues. wink

Marsalis acts like he got a chip on his shoulder just because of who his father and brother is. lol

Gunsnhalen

I Can honestly see where both are coming from, but Miles to me did so much for than Wynton.

Miles was doing his thing and fucking up other jazz players way before Wynton was ever born, and dare i say it....

But i loved when Miles could crossover jazz purists will say i'm a ''trader to the music'' FUCK ALL THAT when you can take a genre like jazz, that usually is not exactly top 40 material, and do stuff that not only non jazz fans got into. But also gave them an introduction and maybe made them curious to check out more of the genre?

People in the jazz circles get way bent out of shape if someone tries to go beyond traditional, when Herbie did rockitt i read what all kinds of people where saying in the jazz circles. They acted as he was the fucking judas of the music world lol

And i made a thread months ago, about the insane reactions from rock fans & jazz fans about Branford Marshals, Omar Hakim & other jazz musicians joining Sting for his solo albums. Rock fans Thought why the hell is Sting making ''black'' music and jazz fans thought Omar & them had sold out to ''white pop music''

In the end... whether it is traditional jazz, jazz fusion or even jazz pop... it can all be good wink

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

All music is shit music and no music is real- gunsnhalen

CynicKill

Wynton was arrogant as a young musician. But with age comes conservatism (it'll happen to a lot of you youngins as well just wait) and he's regretted saying a lot of what he did back then.

To me the one with the nasty attitude is Branford. I don't know if he's mellowed or not but I've seen interviews with him where he thought he was the best thing since sliced bread.

There are exceptions. I dig some of their material that sounds more like funk than jazz.
