Delia Derbyshire feat. Barry Bermange ~ Falling You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Five years ago when lime-wire was around, I downloaded some of her recordings just for kicks. She had some interesting concepts and works to say the least, too bad she doesn't get wide recognition. Its similar to Laurie Anderson, her style is a bit too bizarre for mainstream tastes. Jeux Sans Frontiers

Alice Shields was also doing this eletronic sounds and tape loops thing during that time. Delia Derbyshire is also responsible for the ambient synth-soundscape that opens "Eye No" on the Lovesexy album. She is uncredited on the liner notes.

It wasn't that common to credit samples in the 1980s, though. It has been said that the Paul's Boutique album is really what got the attention of copyright holders. Prince didn't "sample" Delia Derbyshire,he lifted a whole minute and a half of one of her compositions and used it to open his LoveSexy album. Imagine if someone took the first minute and a half of,let's say,"1999" and used it on their album, untouched.

Well, Rick James sued MC Hammer, but Prince didn't. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. This winter I attended a showing of a Delia documentary. I only knew her recordings with The White Noise.
