D'Angelo would like to personally apologize for the underwhelming response to a one-off, behind the scenes video for a photoshoot he did for a fashion magazine.

Prince has always had a reputation as a sex god/gigolo. It was always his image. He treated his women well. It never was considered sleazy
Madonna's reputation was that she slept her way to the top & bent over for every attractive hot at the moment dude she saw. Its a difference. I'm not downing her. She went after who she wanted with no shame for being a woman with confidence. But she still was a slut. But i still admire her drive & success...

I agree I wanted more of the video, but please leave the man alone. Making a comeback is not easy. |

Great interview. Hopefully his new CD will REALLY be released before the year is out.
And as much as I hate the term "Neo Soul", Meshell was the one who kicked the door open in the 90's with "Plantation Lullabies". Maxwell, D, Erykah and everyone else came after. |

Yes this is true! It's also a label that D'angelo despises.

I don't think D needs any defending. He is a talented guy....just not on the same level as Prince.
I am a HUUUUUUGE D fan, always have been, always will be. But I think D would react the same way if you said he’s surpassed Prince. Cmon now. When we fans say ish like that, that only hurts him in the long run because the Prince stans listen to any new stuff ONLY in comparison to Prince, not in comparison to himself, and find any and every fault with it. The brotha is GOOD, very GOOD, influenced by greats, has his own sound, and that’s that. [Edited 5/26/12 8:12am] |

People comparing D angelo and Prince smh..... WHY?
Prince didnt invent the Minnepolis sound, he just enhanced it. D angelo is a very talented artist from his generation but compared to Prince.... NO. D angelo did however unlike Prince innovated a genre all his own and created a sound that alot of artists today still follow suit. Alot of artists still do the minneplis sound to but Prince didnt invent that. Prince is lightyears ahead of D and is a legend.
I hate when people compare legends to artists out now
Yes he did invent the Minneapolis soung and if you want to give Morris and Andre credit fine as they were apart of it from the beginning.

And you do not remember that Jabs that the D'Angelo camp made at Prince !!!
The truth of the matter is you have not been able to skip over any new music by D'Angelo in over a decade. Dude is not at P's level as a showman, musician or even at developing his own genre.
Maybe one day he will make the jump but think about the chances of that happening in today's music world.
Hi Laura!
The only jab from D´Angelo´s camp that I remember was that comment in his booklet but that line wasn´t written by him. ( I think it was Saul Williams). Of course, using someone else´s disrespectful quote could be considered a mild jab but I honestly don´t remember ANY bad stuff about Prince coming from D´Angelo´s people. Prince dissed them hard when he invited Quest and D to Paisley Park to jam with him and then only played stuff they didn´t know ( I found that rather mean and childish on Prince´s behalf, let´s not forget that they both admire Prince and know his music inside out...why the mindgames?).
There was a VIBE interview where Quest mentioned that Prince forgot the bridge to Ballad of Dorothy Parker during an aftershow and D´Angelo and Quest supposedly helped him cover that but I don´t know if that could even be considered a jab. Maybe so...because they didn´t have to mention it and make it sound like they were bragging about it.
I don´t see D´Angelo taking Prince place in the future or reach his level but, then again, D´s first two albums ( his only proper releases so far except for the live album and the "Best Of" album) are instant classics. They sound very timeless and strong after all those years and were instant hits when they came out. Prince needed four albums to reach similar status as a commercially and artistically relevant artist.
I prefer Prince any day but I really, really like D´Angelo´s music and his live shows. He´s the last of the great ones with just two albums under his belt.
All of that stuff that happened was disrespectful and as far as P is concerned he was in his studio and he can play what he wants to play. Maybe he wanted to see what those guys could do with some new music.
Prince made the jump with "Dirty Mind" artist wise and commercially with 1999. Vodoo was not a successful CD. I enjoy D'Angelo as a artist but too much time has passed and I think it would take a miracle for him to blow up in the music world of today. |

The GQ interviewer said in the interview outtakes,"He tells me art, not commerce, is his fuel". That can't be said for most others in this generation of musicmakers.

I just got it. Michael Fassbender is on the cover. He says the death of J Dilla finally sobered him up and said the car crash he got into made Clive retract a 3 million contract. The article also says that Irving Azoff cut the $40,000 check that got D in rehab in Antigua. He also says his arrest for solicitation was due to him making a dumb decision and says "look at the shit I've been in. I'm not a role model motherfucker."
The quote from the org is: "While it's cool that dude is getting in better shape, I hope his trying to get back to the way othe people picture him or want him to be. Dude just needs to get his head straight."
To which D says his head is straight.
[Edited 5/16/12 18:30pm]
Wait... what? I said that. What I said exactly is...
"So while its cool that dude is getting in better shape, I hope he's not trying to get back to the way other people picture him, or want him to be. Dude just needs to get his head right."
... it's in the"D'Angelo's 2012 Mini European Tour" thread.
So like, where's this article, yo?

Oh, OK. I found it. That's kind of weird. Cool, I guess. I recognized it as something I said immediately. I guess there could be worse things than being quoted as a member of a site with "devotees of all things funky". Actually, ya know, using my NAME wouldn't have sucked, though.
Edit: Because proper spelling and use of the English language is our friend.

Great interview, saw him in his comeback show in Stockholm earlier this year and it's time for the damn album to come out already.... He's obsessed with Marvin, he did an interview in swedish radio and I think he mentioned him at least 10 times lol... Also I think it's quite interesting people can't accept other opinions, if someone thinks D'angelo is better than Prince, fine that's their personal opinion... Focus on the damn music, who cares who you think is better, the music is the most important anyways ! I cant wait for his album to come out tho, it's been far 2 long... I thought that tracks such "Leavin, "Slow Wine", "(Lay Your Head On My) Pillow", "Gangsta Groove" and "Anniversary" from Tony Toni Toné's "Sons Of Soul" album were the first signs of new classic soul, 2 years prior to D's debut. And TTT's Raphael Saadiq contributed to D's debut as well.
