Tuesday along with the online article is supposed to be a video GQ is posting of D'angelo as well. The lady who wrote the article, said it on twitter.

KoolEaze said: I´m happy that one of the last keepers of soul and funk is back again. Hopefully Maxwell and Badu will follow with some strong material, too.
I'm happy too, and if it is a great album maybe it would inspire Prince as well "So fierce U look 2night, the brightest star pales 2 Ur sex..."

I shall wait patiently then. A funk a day keeps the nose away.

I wanted to say that, too, but to be honest, I´ve given up hope that Prince might be inspired by competitors like he used to be in the past. These days, he doesn´t seem to "get" what is so interesting about artists like Maxwell or D´Angelo. Not that they are necessarily better but I rarely skip any tracks when I listen to D´Angelo´s albums or Maxwell´s Embry and Urban Hang Suite. If Prince were still inspired by great musicians, then Urban Hang Suite and D´Angelo´s albums would´ve been a wake up call..but alas, the first person he thought of when he released Emancipation was R.Kelly. I don´t think that he takes them seriously enough to be inspired by their success and their soulful music and stage shows. THAT was in the 80s..when he would draw inspiration from other and came up with something new and better.
Dude doesn´t even get his own music and why it resonates with people...I don´t really expect him to get D´Angelo or Maxwell. Like them, maybe. Respect them, probably sometimes...but being inspired by some friendly competition? Nah. We know what he came up with after Voodoo. The Rainbow Children and stuff like Muse 2 the Pharaoh. In a similar vein like D but with weak lyrics. He doesn´t take them seriously enough, and THEY are both too much in awe of him to really challenge him. I still remember that junkie jab at D´Angelo in Prince´s Daisy Chain video. That was really cheap. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I´d rather wait and get to hear great music than get a mediocre album every now and then. But yeah, you´re right. 12 years IS indeed a tad too long. But hey, I am sure it will be worth the wait. He´s one of the last great ones, and people don´t appreciate him the way they should. Folks are STILL talking about his looks in the Untitled video which is the least important aspect of his career, IMO. I´m glad to have witnessed him in concert back then, and I´m looking forward to seeing him again one day and can´t wait to hear a new album. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

My grown kids were in grammer school when his last cd came out. I hope they have not applied 4 AARP when the next one comes out.

A friend of mine was quite successful in the early to mid 90s. Then he took a very long break with the occasional and rare EP release in between. These days, his music is better than ever but it´s weird for him to do a show in front of those who are in their late teens, early twenties. He still goes on stage expecting them to know him, and some do due to word of mouth and his underground legend status but, to be honest, most weren´t even wearing diapers during his golden age. They weren´t even sperm cells back then. With Maxwell and D´ Angelo, you have a similar situation. It must be pretty difficult after a certain point to reach an audience because the point in time where younger audiences won´t recognize you or won´t be able to dig your music is definitely a major risk to consider. Then again, good music will always be appreciated, even by the younger ones.
I hope he won´t sell out. I really dig his individual style and sound, very soulful and unique, and warm. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I really love D's work that is probably why I still push this cat after all of these years. Just "release it' already.

There's this interview, where Quest says D'angelo said he was going to purposely wait a long time before he came back out, and he told him that was crazy. Maybe there is a method to D'angelo's madness. We shall see.

Very nice piece on D'Angelo. Well written, and informative. Lots of info on his background, and upbringing. There are bits and pieces about Madonna, Chris Rock, Alan Leeds, Angie Stone, and of course, Questlove. I wouldn't have picked up GQ otherwise, but glad I did after Scriptgirl posted this. I look forward to some shows, & new music. Good for him for getting it all back on track.

I really hope he gets what he desires out of his life. I would be excited to hear a new album but the Earth has continued its revolutions since Voodoo:
Van Hunt By The Bull J*Davey
Just three examples of Black American musicians making worthwhile, interesting music. This is like that moment in Jedi when Obi says "This ninja is all we got" and Yoda corrects him and says, "No, there is another (ninja)." The article makes it seem like Archer's a music/cultural savior of some sorts but that is a mantle that is unwieldly for anyone.
But I wish him the best! | |
