I thought it was pretty good too. I can tell that she's been working on her vocals.

Yes. I think the age thing has a lot to do with how she's being received. I'm in my 40's and I think she's alright, at least on this one song. She has name recognition with my generation, but my kids don't know who she is. She should have started her career in her teens. She probably would have made it big then, and still be in mix now. The album er CD should be marketed to the 35 and over crowd.

You know, if you think about it she can't win for losing. No matter what people would always try to find a way to say she doesn't match up to her dad. Even if she sounded like Mariah Carey they'd still say that shit.

maybe yes, maybe no.
when she first came out in 2000(?), i was lurking on some thread and the discussion was about why her first album had pretty much flopped given the massive promotion (vh1 profile, rolling stone cover, critical approval if not acclaim, diane sawyer interview).
the general consensus seemed to be that aside from the controversy of having married mj - which to a lot of elvis fans was the ultimate 'betrayal' of her father - here was a woman who hadn't paid any dues. she was in her mid-30s, and had never toured or sang in front of an audience, (and wasn't all that good when she finally did), but she was allowed to start at the very top, in terms of media access and attention. none of it was based on what she had accomplished but what her father had. even now, in that l.a. times article posted above, t-bone burnett states he wanted to produce something elvis would have dug. the man's been dead nearly 35 years; what's he got to do with anything?
but it's this type of treatment that those posters were alluding to. lmp was seen by them as a dilitante(sp?), who when she isn't "playing pop star" or whatever lives in fabulous wealth and has all of this superstar level treatment at her feet not because of anything she's done, but only because who her father was. they were turned off by it all, and i think that generally remains the case. I really don't think it's fair on her though. She could have started in her 20s, but she was a young mother at the time and from what I gather a good one.
I dont think she's a great live singer/performer, but I can think of dozens of female singers that aren't either and are more succesful. It also couldn't have helped that when her debut album was released it was bang in the middle of MJ's arrest & trial so aside from Elvis she was getting questions about him too with little attention to the music.
Sure there's nepotism involved with the attention she got on the launch of her first album, but that's not unique. How many acting dynasties are there with big families and only one particular major talent? Or what about pop singers and stand-up comedians getting acting roles in huge blockbusters without having proven themselves first?
I think the criticism is just because her links are bigger than anyone else can lay claim to, but take the fame and success of her family/spouses down a few notches and she'd have had the same doors opened to her, just without the baggage.

I don't buy any of this shit at all - considering how there's been tons of overnight sensations that have paid little to no dues, over the course of modern music history.

The number of Elvis fans who felt that way was miniscule compared to the number of people who believe (or hoped) Elvis fans felt that way.

hey, i'm just stating what the posters on that thread stated. they didn't like mj, felt that she had disgraced her father's memory, and even more than that, they questioned her being given the royal treatment when they didn't think it was warranted or deserved.
whatever the reasons, whether you think she deserves it, or doesn't deserve it more than others, lmp is fighting an uphill battle. witness the comments on this thread.

What kind of BS is that. "I can accept lipsynching from J-Lo." I think anyone who makes a LIVING on singing, should be judged the same way. Plus, how can those losers who make a living on bitching people have the nerve to criticise anyone.
"When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."
