Janet sounded kind of decent on the debut album, but then got lost vocally on Dream Street. I think the first album reminded me of Off The Wall, and Dream Street of MJ and Prince's sound a little, though not as strong.

To be honest, I don't think Janet's acting was all that great with the guys in Control, they overshadowed her though she was okay with her "parents". So maybe it's better that movie was not her debut, and that she focused on her music career for sometime.

The first album for me is a mix of OTW and Thriller's sound, with "Young Love" sounding veeeerrrry like Baby Be Mine! But definitely with more of that disco flavor of OTW.

I think her acting was natural, especially with the guys. You could tell they have a close relationship!

The first album came out before Thriller did though....but I'm sure she already heard it in his car! Don't Mess Up This Good Thing made me think of Baby Be Mine more, as did Young Love.

^ Weeeelll only by two months haha! I agree, I mean Michael had been working on that album for most of 1982 so without a doubt she probably heard some of it. But then again, this album was written for her....I don't think she had much creative input.

Figured I might as well stick them in this thread....going through a bit of a Morris Day phase at the moment and I can't stop drawing him:

Oh Lord. Can you imagine if they had cashed in and made an animated tv series of Purple Rain like they did with almost every other 80's movie? It would have to be so watered down, but it would totally work if it was just Morris and Jerome every week getting into antics with surprise appearances by Prince and Apples on their honeymoon or whatever happy ending Warner Bros would try to make up LMAO.

Supposedly, they made a pilot for a sitcom. I think it was in the late 1990's. Morris did appear in two programs though, neither lasted that long.

Great illustrations. Glad to have another Janet fan here biggrin Like others have said Control was a Flyte Tyme album with Janet leading her vocals (which fit perfect with everything) as well as some writing. I really don't think it was until RN when Janet started really making the music.

Should've cashed in on the Purple Rain fame in the 80's! I think teaming Jerome and Morris in anything would've been decent. This is why Under The Cherry Moon falls flat on it's ass....Prince is essentially taking the place of Morris and the chemistry just isn't there.

Thanks man! Janet takes co-producing credits on all of Control's songs, but I think it was more the guys teaching her the ways of the studio and her helping out a bit. RN definitely had more of her input, and then by the time Janet. came around she was writing songs herself. Personally, I think The Velvet Rope is her most personal and best effort, even though I prefer RN or Control as a whole album.

Morris didn't even want to do Purple Rain. He had little interest in The Time after Jam & Lewis were fired. Jesse said that Morris hardly interacted with the replacements, and so he (Jesse) was the one who had to show them what to do and rehearse the band. Morris was upset that Prince had more power over his band than he did, and also wanted more control over the albums. He, Monte, & Jellybean quit the group. Morris only returned because he was under contract to do the film and album. Jellybean & Monte was asked to return, Monte declined and stayed with Jam & Lewis. Jellybean returned because he needed the money. Soon as the film was finished, Morris bolted. Prince asked Jesse to front the group, but Jesse figured he wouldn't have much control, so he quit too. Jesse took a couple of the newer Time members (Mark Cardenas & Jerry Hubbard) with him and put them in his group The Revue. The leftovers were made into The Family. Since Jerome was still working with Prince, it's unlikely that Morris would have done anything with him at the time.

Oh I know that, but I was just making a hypothetical what-if comment, haha! And I don't think anybody knew how much Purple Rain was going to take off. Morris may have dragged his feet to the project, but he's probably one of the best parts of the film with that little gem of an acting gene I don't think he even knew he had. That said, I think he expected parts to be handed to him after the film and that he was above the audition process, which is why his career in acting never really took off after that. Such a pity 'cause the guy is a natural!

When I said Prince is essentially "taking the place" I didn't mean it literally; I meant the character is in the same VEIN as Morris' in Purple Rain, and Prince was trying to do that and it really didn't work.

I thought Morris was funny and crazy since I was young. I wondered what was up with his coat and would laugh everytime he danced onstage in the Jungle Love video while looking at himself in the mirror, so random lol but hey I was young...but I loved the song and all the outfits the people in the audience had....and I thought Appolonia was gorgeous!

Control era Janet is my favorite from her. I was definitely drawn in by that sound. I like The Pleasure Principle most out of all the songs from Control.

Thank you dude! Pleasure Principle is definitely a great track, but I much prefer the remix heard on the video version...it's mixed slightly with the 'extra beats' track from Control: The Remixes which in turn is taken from When I Think Of You!

So why on earth would you come into a thread with her name in it to say something as stupid as that? LMFAO.

Never heard this, I think a lot of tracks were written with Janet in mind, so I doubt they were for cherrelle first, but who knows...

Jimmy and Terry had actually written the basis for some of the songs and shopped them to Sharon Bryant, who had left Atlantic Starr for a solo career. I think people think Cherelle was the one offered the songs because JJ/TL produced most of her songs as well.

At the beginning of the Control video Janet is picked up from her home by ex-Time members - Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Jellybean and Jerome. But whose the brother with them driving the hog?

I like Janet too. I think she's a very good singer, lots of charisma in the voice, and stage presence of course. I think she could still do "Minneapolis sound" songs, like those Elixer songs - woulda been hella better than Bria.

I didn't know anything about the Time until I got into Prince in the 90s. But everybody knew about Janet - "Control" was huge!

I think she did as much for the MPLSound as it did for her - she brought it to the mainstream; not just "urban" r&b listeners, not just Prince fans, but everybody was listening to "Control." She toned down the overt sexuality and/or machismo of the MPLSound, and with the postive messages, she made that funky sound accessible to a huge audience.

Also interesting, the music seemed to suit basketball really well - I remember hearing the clips on NBA highlights all the time.

Safetypin - the dude in the blue jacket? I have no clue!

Also with Control, yeah Jam and Lewis had the basis of the songs but Janet helped develop a lot of the lyrics. She doesn't go much into it in her book (I hope there's a thorough autobiography in the works!), but she does say that songs like Nasty were inspired by her time away from home, running into not-so-nice guys on the street and basically realising how sheltered she'd been in LA.

I had a meeting with an award winning radio documentary maker earlier this week about the possibility of making some programmes with her.

I wanted to do something on the one of the Jacksons and when I mentioned Janet her response was 'she did often use her family name to get places didn't she?'

Although people say this untrue comment all the time - it really depressed me that a music 'expert' would have this opinion. I guess I should expect it from someone in the UK.
