Yes! Beck is a huge fan of Prince.
And yes, Beck is a scientologist. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Yes, I thought of the same thing the first time I bought a Beck CD. I think he's been very influenced by Prince.

The only similarities between Prince and Beck is the fact that they are great synthesists of music. They love to mash things up but I think Beck is a bit more extreme with it. But if Beck wants to go on a complete musical change of direction, he would where Prince doesn't really. I mean, stuff on N.E.W.S. could have been on The Love Symbol album or even on SOTT. Guero and Sea Change are two entirely different albums.
And a "white Prince"? It's sad that some people can only see skin colour when trying to make a point or distuguish one person from another.

Some good points here. However, I've always found a large part of Beck's material as being completeley phony. He is a great sythesist indeed, but he seems to be too much of a copy and paste artist for me. Two turntables and a microphone indeed. Although, Sea Change is great.

White Prince?
| |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
yep, this has been discussed many times
many folks don't like the "white Prince" thing, the racial connotations...
I prefer to say that Beck was one of the few rock artists of the 90s that definitely used some of Prince's tricks of the 80s...
but of course, Beck also owes a lot of to Dylan and The Talking Heads...

Nah, he's not strange and interesting enough to be. 비

Beck is a musician-poet who transcends genres even as he re-invents them. I'm afraid of Americans. I'm afraid of the world.

...You talkin' about the same dude who sang about sex and handcuffs slipping from wrists?
Or about how he thinks he's a loser so someone should kill him?
All subject matter that's been covered before by other artists - and done better.
Just because he isn't considered super-mainstream, doesn't automatically make him GOOD, by default. There's plenty of spit being spat out on both sides of that fence. 비

How come you dont call me?? sea change is a dark brooding folk album I dont know how a sexy piano song like how come you dont call me would fit on that album but then its all subjective anyway. No problem can withstand the assault of sustained thinking!

If you look closely at Wille's work, you see tons of released cover songs or original songs written by somebody else. Still, Nelson has written a ton of songs, but many of them sound alike. His best selling album, Stardust, is a covers album from the late 70's. I don't really like Willie or country for that matter, but Prince hardly ever records cover songs. (Like 4 or 5 officially released?) There are a few artists who write as much or more than Prince, but I doubt any of them even touch the quality of Prince's released or unreleased songs. Not even Prince. We all know there a ton of unreleased songs better than Jughead, Daddy Pop, Wedding Feast, Dear Mr Man, Life O The Party, etc....

i think a better question would be 'is prince the black david byrne'?
but that would make beck the white david byrne, with no way of knowing which david byrne david byrne actually is...gray beck, maybe?

Weird. I posted a similar thread a few years back. Beck used to sound like Prince, now he has kind of went away.
I tend to now think Andre 3000 is the new Prince, but he's darker than butterball Prince. lol All you others say Hell Yea!!

Nope. At the end of the day, 3 Stacks is just a rapper while Prince is a musical genius.

There ain't no white Prince. Someone mentioned David Byrne of Talking Heads, he's about the closest white guy i can think of. We're here, might as well get into it.

oh, come on, that's like saying "isn't prince the guy who used to sing about 'shakin that ass' and wanting to be your girlfriend".
is beck mainstream? is he underground? what difference does it make. people seem to enjoy his music, a lot. his albums sell well and his peers (and most of the critics) seem to think he's one of the best and most interesting artists around.
heck, if you'd ask prince, i'm sure he would say beck was a cool dude since he writes and records most of his records by himself, plays many instruments, produces and arranges for others and is able to put on one heck of a live show. (real music from real musicians blablabla).
but beyond all that. why do people always say "just because he's..... doesn't make him good" if someone likes an artist or mentions comparisons to prince?
what do you guys think, that we sit around all day, reading magazines and just listen to the band that they say is 'the most indi and ultra underground'? lol. people listen to music because they like what they hear. you don't buy every cd by someone just because they're "hot" or mainstream or not mainstream. that would be silly. who does that?
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Beck is an amazing musician... that being said. Beck is Beck the white Beck & Prince is Prince... the black Prince
I hate when people have to compare this to that, Beck s unique, Prince is unique.
Plus i really love both guys, but if you compare them of course since this a fansite people will say Prince & will say bad thing's about Beck. And i anyone has only heard Loser i HIGHLY reccomend checking out his work, listen to it you may enjoy it Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener
