I just remembered this song today when Lenny came up! I don't play it as much as the 5 album.
Takes me back to the end of high school, and I can soooo relate to the lyrics

I remember how strongly many people disliked this song even if it was a big hit. I think it's okay for what it is, but it signaled of the turn for the worse. The song is a bit too simple, the drums just sort of drag along throughout the song, his vocals are really nasal and the lyrics unimaginative. He also cleaned up his looks a lot during this time (too much, you know?). Not sure what he got out of doing this type of music himself.

The melody of the verses reminded me of I Want It That Way and the chorus reminded of Controversy, kinda

I'm a huge lenny fan and I thought this song wasn't bad. It was definitely simplistic and a turn for the worse, though. Somewhere between Circus and 5 he really lost his grit. It was his mom's passing I'm sure. That boy loved his mama in a huge way.

I remember when the song was first released I hated it but I grew to like it after I started to dig his music years later.

Geesh, i mean i am a HUGE Lenny fan & i love this song. i was in 4th grade when it came out & it was played pretty regular from 00-02 ahhh good memories.
I mean... i really don't get why people are mad about how ''simple'' the song sounds
This was a song he just kind of threw out there his greatest hits, he literally just threw it together. It's not gonna be Mozart or Dream Theatre
Also he look's finnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnne fionnnnnnnne as hell in this video getting this white boy hot & bothered Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I think Lenny has that affect on just about everyone whether black, white, male or female! Hell, I'm almost 49 and I've had the hots for Lenny since he was Romeo Blue! He just gets better and better looking.

Sometimez u don't need 2 be "complicated" or think so hard when less will do. He's played this song and all his others a lot of different ways over the years, which is always the mark of a great musician.

An OK song. I remember when this song came out a lot of folks here on the org RIPPED "Again" apart because it sounded too much like P's "Wherever" song.
...and I still lust after Gina Gershon.

There is simplicity that works (like the song "Heaven Help"). Then there are songs like "Again" that just seem sort of lazy.

I loved her in Face/Off, Showgirls, and Prey For Rock N Roll

Depends on how he wrote it. It seemed like Heaven Help was written on a piano/organ, so it came out as R&B /soul, while Again may have been writtten around the guitar or drum groove, so it came down as a mid tempo/pop/rocker. I don't see where he's lazy in this song. Some of the best songs also come from brief/beautiful moments and it seems like whoever that lady was he was talkin 2 put somethin beautiful on his heart....

Was the release of Lenny's Greatest Hits album perfect timing or what?

I am using the word "lazy" to describe the songwriting because it doesn't sound like he's pushing himself with that song. It's like "okay, I got a verse and something of a chorus, I'll just call my lead guitarist and tell him to add a solo in the middle" and that's it.
Lenny had had simple songs on his albums before, but for example on tracks like "Don't Put A Bullet In Your Head" or "Thinking Of You" he is using well thought out rhythms and he is doing more interesting things with his voice. The rhythm section on "Again" just sort of plods along all throughout the song and by that point his singing voice had started to get irritatingly monotonous (at least to my ears). It's like a song built from lego blocks, or something.
This is one of my favourite songs of his from his late-90s / 00s period, but I'd still consider the songwriting on it "lazy":
Likewise:
He's just had too many of these "straightforward" songs with uninteresting guitar strumming and simple choruses by this point. I found his latest album to be an improvement in that regard. [Edited 5/12/12 12:02pm]

The melodies are almost identical, only the tempo and production are different. I can not understand how someone could not hear that.
When Mr. Kravitz released his single there even was a comment on prince's website Love4oneanother.com about the similarities.

I was just as cknfused then as I am still. There is some sort of vague hint of a momentary similarity...but take me to the river(talking heads) and let the good times roll(the cars) sound more similar than again and wherever.

Lenny was big in my book at this time. I remember learning the chords on my guitar..... One of his last good songs. I think when Lisa Bonet cut off his dreads, she did a Samson/Delilah thing to Lenny. He had one last decent album and that was it. MAN I DISLIKED LISA BONET..... Think I still do.
