Phil Collins ~ I Missed Again You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Loved how this song developed from a ballad to an almost Motown Sound type groover. Phil is probably the greatest rock drummer of all time also.

Phil once said that some of the later Genesis fans didn't know he was a drummer. That could have to do with him performing the majority of his songs onstage in front of audiences and not necessarily with the drums. I guess you can compare it to Karen Carpenter because Carpenters fans said the same thing about her.

I don't think many people know that Jeffrey Osbourne, Teddy Pendergrass, Stevie Wonder, & Marvin Gaye are drummers either. Someone said in another thread that they didn't know Aretha Franklin played piano. I thought that was something well known. Yeah and there's footage of Marvin and Stevie cutting loose on drums or some form of percussion... folks (some) probably have short term memory loss about Aretha playing piano because as I'm concerned, that was a well known fact for me.

Really?
I always thought this was a Genesis song.

Phil solo songs and Genesis songs (some) were too hard to decipher in the '80s... I guess the only way you can tell which was which was how much guitar was in it...

Especially if you were only familiar with the band from their singles.

You might be talking about No Reply At All. It has a similar video and the Earth Wind & Fire horns. Yes....this is the song, but I still could not tell the difference between a Genesis song and a Phil Collins song. Oh well

Really? I hope you don't mean generally speaking!

All I can say to that is: WORD! He may have penned one too many sappy love songs during his solo career, but he was always a monster on those drums! [Edited 5/12/12 1:56am]

Maurice White, plays drums as well. "Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth"

This doesn't sound like Phil's solo stuff. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I always wondered why Phil got dissed on so much. And sometimes Still does...
Yes he did make some poppy songs & Genesis where not the prog rock band they once where when he was lead singer. But they still imo made some classic songs! and Phil himself make's fantastic melodies! some of the best of the 80's & early 90's. Another interesting thing about Collins is the Hip-Hop cred he gets, his songs have been ampled many times, and there was that Hip-Hop, R&B Tribute album to him. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I think part of the reason Phil got props from the R&B and hip-hop communities was because he took what was then a risk having an R&B horn section around him and half the time his music was influenced by a lot of R&B, which explains why older Genesis fans were mad because before they were strictly progressive rock under the direction of Peter Gabriel but Phil Collins just had one of those voices so he and Genesis couldn't be stuck to one genre. I know lots of black folks who have at least one Phil disc in their collections and they ain't ashamed of it.

Of course it didn't because it was in the '70s and Genesis was basically Peter's group but you knew that.

The first few albums right after Peter left were still prog based, especially the 2 with Steve still in the group. Even on later abums there were always a few songs that were closer to their earlier sound, but maybe without the Dungeon & Dragons lyrics. Home by the Sea, Mama, Driving the last spike...Genesis released some great songs with Phil at the helm! I guess they found the sweet spot to still make avantgarde records and become one of the best selling acts of the eighties in the process
