It's too bad Berry Gordy was losing money from making videos for Rick James & MJGs. Motown Records could never make videos as often because they didn't have a bigger finanical backing like Warner Brothers & CBS (Sony) did in the early 1980's.

Well most of the acts on Motown were losing money (or wasn't getting it in the first place) way before the music videos were made.

I like their "Boys" video better When JoJo sings "you just call me any week when you feel the need to freak...and I'll be there",her body movements lets you know exactly what she's talking about!

Well THAT has 2 be the BEST Motown Video of the time other than The MJG's "In My House" & Lionel Richie's videos....Oh yeah: Debarge too!!! Everything else SUCKED!!!!! Even Rockwell's video!!!!

By this time Rick's songs were becoming tragically derivative.

He was still funky, but the quality of his output paled next to his earlier material.

Actually,"Lovergirl" isn't on Motown,it's from Epic.I don't think that Teena did any music videos for her Motown singles but I could be wrong (could you imagine the cool video she could have done for a song like "Square Biz"?).Likewise,"Muscles" and "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" is from RCA Records,which is where Diana went after she left Motown in 1981.The Commodores' 1986 hit "Going To The Bank" isn't on Motown,either.The guys angrily left Motown in late 1985 because they felt that the label was ignoring them to focus more on Lionel Richie.Here are a few other 80s Motown videos that I remember...

I love Rick,but I agree with you.One of his biggest problems (post-Street Songs) was his inability to grow,evolve and try new things.Let's be honest...Throwin' Down is basically just Street Songs Part 2.He kept repeating the same themes over and over.It got to the point where,everytime he came out with a new single,it was usually about a fast,loose woman that he was fascinated with

Granted,these are good songs.Rick was a master at these types of songs.But when you don't grow and evolve,the record-buying public gets bored very quickly.

Diana Ross did do more videos after she returned to Motown in 1989 starting with Working Overtime, where she's wearing a t-shirt, ripped jeans and a leather jacket. There's also one for Take Me Higher and I think there's one for her cover of I Will Survive, and When You Tell Me That You Love Me, too. Possibly videos were made for The Force Behind The Power and You're Gonna Love It as well.

it's such a shame that the Mary Jane Girls never released a third album There were plans for another album,to be titled 'Conversation',but Rick was feuding with Motown at the time and the Mary Jane Girls were caught in the middle of it.He left Motown for a new deal with Warner Bros.,but he didn't bring the girls with him.They never made another album.

One of the girls said that they actually wanted Jam and Lewis to produce a new album for them,but alas,it never happened.

Assuming that the album was completed,I wish Motown would take the album out of the vaults and finally release it.Several years ago,I used to post on the Motown message boards and several of us were requesting that they release it.
