Mary Jane Girls' Video For "Candy Man" Has To Be THE COOLEST 80s Video Ever,,,

Hell, that scene alone where the white girl was chewing the hard candy like its air and spitting it out should be enough for this claim lol

It's too bad Berry Gordy was losing money from making videos for Rick James & MJGs. Motown Records could never make videos as often because they didn't have a bigger finanical backing like Warner Brothers & CBS (Sony) did in the early 1980's.

Well most of the acts on Motown were losing money (or wasn't getting it in the first place) way before the music videos were made.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I like their "Boys" video better lol When JoJo sings "you just call me any week when you feel the need to freak...and I'll be there",her body movements lets you know exactly what she's talking about! razz razz

By this time Rick's songs were becoming tragically derivative.

He was still funky, but the quality of his output paled next to his earlier material.

Actually,"Lovergirl" isn't on Motown,it's from Epic.I don't think that Teena did any music videos for her Motown singles but I could be wrong (could you imagine the cool video she could have done for a song like "Square Biz"?).Likewise,"Muscles" and "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" is from RCA Records, which is where Diana went after she left Motown in 1981.The Commodores' 1986 hit "Going To The Bank" isn't on Motown, either. The guys angrily left Motown in late 1985 because they felt that the label was ignoring them to focus more on Lionel Richie. Here are a few other 80s Motown videos that I remember...

Vanity--Pretty Mess/Under The Influence

El DeBarge--Who's Johnny/Love Always

Lushus Daim and the Pretty Vain--The One You Love

Stevie Wonder was one of the lucky ones. After 1982 or so,he was allowed to make videos for just about every single he released. In addition to the videos that you listed,I also recall several late-80s videos from his 'Characters' album.

I love Rick, but I agree with you.One of his biggest problems (post-Street Songs) was his inability to grow, evolve and try new things.Let's be honest...Throwin' Down is basically just Street Songs Part 2.He kept repeating the same themes over and over.It got to the point where, everytime he came out with a new single,it was usually about a fast, loose woman that he was fascinated with lol

Hard To Get (1982)

Cold Blooded (1983)

U Bring The Freak Out (1983)

17 (1984)

U Turn Me On (1984)

Sweet And Sexy Thing (1986)

Loosey's Rap (1988)

Granted, these are good songs.Rick was a master at these types of songs. But when you don't grow and evolve, the record-buying public gets bored very quickly.

I have always LOVED this video! Just proves you don't have to have elaborate story lines and fancy props to make a great video.

Diana Ross did do more videos after she returned to Motown in 1989 starting with Working Overtime, where she's wearing a t-shirt, ripped jeans and a leather jacket. There's also one for Take Me Higher and I think there's one for her cover of I Will Survive, and When You Tell Me That You Love Me, too. Possibly videos were made for The Force Behind The Power and You're Gonna Love It as well.

it's such a shame that the Mary Jane Girls never released a third album confused There were plans for another album,to be titled 'Conversation',but Rick was feuding with Motown at the time and the Mary Jane Girls were caught in the middle of it.He left Motown for a new deal with Warner Bros.,but he didn't bring the girls with him. They never made another album.

One of the girls said that they actually wanted Jam and Lewis to produce a new album for them, but alas,it never happened.

Now, that reunion would be out of sight! Especially if Jo Jo has the same kind of pipes she used to have.

He didn't get along with them either(esp Jo Jo), which is a nice way to put it in comparision to what he said in the book lol

I remember checking the record store several times for that and finally got word

that Motown shelved the album. Rick eventually gave some of the songs to

Val Young for her Private Conversation album.

Assuming that the album was completed,I wish Motown would take the album out of the vaults and finally release it.Several years ago,I used to post on the Motown message boards and several of us were requesting that they release it.
