This is great. I'm so glad he's started working again. He seemed so depressed and forlorn in "Midnight Mover" that I was worried about him. Glad he's got life in him still.

Hopefully it'll be a killer record.

Bobby Womack announces first new album in 13 years

Co-produced by Damon Albarn and Richard Russell, The Bravest Man in the Universe will also feature Lana Del Rey

March 9, 2012

Bobby Womack has announced his first new album in 13 years, produced by Damon Albarn and XL Recordings' Richard Russell. Due on 11 June, The Bravest Man in the Universe also features Lana Del Reyand Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara.

"It didn't take us long to make, but it felt like all of our lifetimes of musical enthusiasm went into the record," Russell wrote on his blog. This is a long time coming: before Albarn brought Womack back into the spotlight, with Gorillaz, the soul singer's career seemed to be finished. "I'd just come off a heavy drug thing," Womack explained last year. "I stopped wanting to be a part of music when the Monkees retired."

But for Albarn and Russell, the 68-year-old is an icon, and they drew him back into studio late last year. "We recorded 16 songs," Russell said, "10 of which will be on the final album." These include the title track, "about the importance of forgiveness", and a similarly themed Please Forgive My Heart, which is streaming now. Besides cameos by Del Rey and Diawara, the LP samples the voices of Gil Scott-Heron and Womack's former boss, Sam Cooke.

"Bobby seemed to relish the opportunity to make something modern and original, and embraced and encouraged the use of unusual sounds and techniques," Russell said. "It was hard to believe how free of ego he was, and how open to new ideas."

Awesome. The vocals are stained but good. And did you notice the little surprise in the last 10 seconds of the video?

Damon Albarn Gifted Bobby Womack With Unused Gorillaz Tracks

April 2012

Link

Soul man Bobby Womack is confident his comeback album will be a big hit - because it features tracks producer pal Damon Albarn was holding back for a Gorillaz project, which now may never happen.

The 68-year-old Across 110th Street singer returned to the studio with Albarn in 2011 for his first proper album in 18 years, and he admits he was more than impressed with the songs the British star brought to the table.

Womack, who joined Gorillaz for two tracks on what could be the band's final album Plastic Beach and then toured with the supergroup, tells Rolling Stone magazine, "I knew he (Albarn) was serious, because he was holding a lot of these songs for the Gorillaz's next album. He said, 'I'm giving you everything I got and more.'"

Albarn recently revealed he and bandmate Jamie Howlett had fallen out - and he feared there would be no more Gorillaz collaborations.

Meanwhile, Womack admits he thoroughly enjoyed recording with Albarn at his Studio 13 in London. He adds, "It reminds me of a little house. They have beds and showers - you don't have to leave."

Bobby Womack unveils new Damon Albarn-produced track from 'The Bravest Man In The Universe' – listen

Album is due to be released on June 11

Bobby Womack has unveiled the title track from his new Damon Albarn-co-produced album 'The Bravest Man In The Universe', which you can hear below.

The album, out June 11, was recorded at the Blur man's Studio 13 in west London with XL Records boss Richard Russell. Speaking to NME about the sessions earlier this year, Womack discussed working with Lana Del Rey on the album, describing the pair as being like "two people in a church".

He added:

She's one of a kind. I've never sung with a girl like that before.

Last month, representatives working for Womack confirmed he had been diagnosed with colon cancer.

Womack commented at the time: "Womack himself said: "My family, friends and I are looking forward to a successful surgery and speedy recovery. I want to thank all of my fans for their prayers, love and well wishes. I look forward to seeing all of you on the road in support of my new release."

The album is soul singer Womack's first LP of original material in 18 years, following 1994's 'Resurrection'. The album will be released on the XL label, also home to Adele and The xx.

Womack is due to play two UK gigs next month - one at London's Heaven on June 14, followed by a slot at the capital's Lovebox festival two days later (16).
