I'm gonna discuss the SKYWRITER LP. This was the brothers transition record, goin from young teenybopper crowd to an older (but still young) crowd.

Because of this, it was their worse sounding record as songs are everywhere. You have a song called "Boogie Man" which it's next track is a song called "Touch." You follow that with a song they recorded almost a year ago at that point in "Corner of the Sky." Even a Corporation outtake "You Made Me What I Am" found it's way onto this record and they had disbaned about a year prior to the release.

The best track on this record is the Four Tops cover "I Can't Quit Your Love." And it seems like they figured that should be the sound they go for. It was the most uptempo/dance track on the album, and would be a sign of things to come later in the year wth the GET IT TOGETHER release.

This album could have been much better if they left out the two older tracks in "Corner" and "You Made Me" and even some others like "Boogie Man." Added could have been a host of outtakes released over the years including

Love's Gone Bad

Love Scenes

Love Is The Thing You Need

Teenage Symphony

Can't Get Ready For Losing You

I'll Try You'll Try (Maybe We'll All Get By)

I'm Glad It Rained

Even a few tracks which are only available in bootleg form like

If I Can't (Nobody Can)

Would Ya, Would Ya!

She Say What?
Jumbo Sam

PRINCE: Always and Forever
MICHAEL JACKSON: Always and Forever

Skywriter found the J-5 in a highly transitional period, as well as Looking Through The Windows. Motown really knew how to milk certain guys and maintain a formula that would somehow wear thin after years. By 1972, the formula was wearing thin and Michael's voice was maturing. Writers and collaborators didn't really know which direction to cater the guys into at that point. Just not a great time, but thank god for Hal Davis and Norman Whitfield pushing them past the bubblegum pop sound and into more mature and experiemental territory.

Here's a group signed to Ivory Tower Records and managed by Papa Joe

MDLT Willis

This song was the most buzzed about since it was produced by the J5 themselves

Windows was a good album though. It wasn't everywhere like Skywriter. It was put together like there first 4 studio albums.

Windows was definitely one of their best albums. It marked a very sudden end of an era where they weren't thought of bubble-gum heavy hitters afterwards. Motown even had a difficult time with Windows because the album largely comprised of songs that were recorded from 1970-1971. The latter part of 1971, Michael's voice changed drastically and some of the 1972 sessions eventually surfaced on the album. As a result, things started getting crazy during this time. Touring and recording constantly took its toll on the brothers and Motown started to lose focus on what was working for the group. It was a major gamble for the boys by that time.

My version of SKYWRITER would have looked like this:

1. Skywriter

2. Hallelujah Day

3. The Boogie Man Can't Get Ready For Losing You (outtake appeared on Soulsation)

4. Touch Love Scenes (outtake appeared on Soulsation)

5. Corner of the Sky I'm Glad It Rained (outtake appeared on Soulsation) (Corner Of The Sky was released as a single almost six months earlier prior to the release of the album, so there was no need to take up space with an old single.)

6. I Can't Quit Your Love

7. Uppermost

8. World Of Sunshine Love's Gone Bad (outtake from Boogie)

9. Oh, I'd Love To Be With You

10. You Made Me What I Am If I Can't (Nobody Can) (never before released, exist in bootleg)

I don't know about this. I like the album the way it is. World Of Sunshine is one of all time favorite songs, the one I play the most from this record.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
