I am THRILLED he is going to come stateside, but not sure this is the right venue. Those women are going to expect him to be like D 2000, ripping off his shirt and stuff and they are going to want to see how he looks first and foremost.

I wonder if other U.S. dates are coming...

I would have preferred he do a small showcase in NYC first-hope his management knows what they are doing.

The EMF is a great way to re-introduce him to fans and industry insiders all over again. If I'm not mistaken, they make the performers do a press junket during the festival. So this is a very smart move.

Remember, it worked for Lionel Richie when he was promoting his Coming Home album and he got a lot of air play with "I Call It Love" after that appearance.

I think this is a smart move as well. The festival is a big event and will give him well needed exposure... Also, he will be performing with others and wont just be by himself

The last time he performed there was in 2000.

Good luck on D doing a press event at Essence fest. When he was in Stockholm this past winter, a DJ who had interviewed him before, who is very D friendly and was even approved by D's camp was set to interview D and D backed out at the last minute because he is too nervous. He is very anti press. His first interview should be a print interview. He needs careful handling.

I agree with you. On twitter quest was saying the crowd was uninterested until untitled. I wish he did an interview so I could know where his head was at mentally. Because if he's still senstive about it, and they do it, it could be bad. There was a video of him performing in Stockholm I think and the lady kept saying take it off. He ignored it. But imagine hundreds saying that.

Believe me, I'm sure the people at Essence either made it clear that he has to do press, OR all parties agreed not to do press.

Hell, they even made Janet Jackson do a press junket.

There is a video of him at Brixton in March and a woman was screaming for him to take off his shirt. I can just imagine the desperate heffas in that crowd, thinking this is 2000. I don't think this is gonig to be a good look. And I stand by my claim about my belief he won't do press.

I'm not sure this Is a good move. I saw him at this feat a few years ago and the crowd didn't seem to get him. I can't remember what other artists were there that night, but it was def not a D'angelo crowd. Festivals are funny that way. I think he'd be better off heading his own concerts at smallish venues or being an opener for someone who has a similar fan base as his. I think enuf of us Prince fans love him.....if/when Prince tours the U.S. again maybe D can get that gig. Just throwing that out there.

Yeah, that isn't really a D'Angelo crowd at all and if the crowd wasn't into him back then...

Yeah, but I doubt D wants to be asked all about all the ish he has been through. Not sure he will ever talk about it and that is what they will ask.

I am sure if he does talk, the questions will be pre approved. I am dying to know his set list. Not sure playing Untitled would be a good move, then again if he doesn't play it...

Untitled is also the song that got him labeled as "hot, naked boy" here in the States. The women at Essence that will see him will be the ones not paying attention to his music, but only interested in his body.

Yes and there is one for crusin. I wouldn't say he is fat, but he is a good deal heavier than he was during the Voodoo era.

He doesnt seem heavy to me, just normal looking.

Its hard to judge because he has a big shirt on but in the face and overall he doesnt appear overweight. But I wont knock that he probably got in more shape for that era..

I think he is the type of person that gains weight all over, you know what I mean-it doesn't seem to go to one place. His face is definitely bigger. D is built like a brick shithouse-he is a big southern boy-he has struggled with his weight since middle school.
