Adele's 21 Overtakes Michael Jackson's Thriller On U.K. All-Time Bestseller List

Adele's unstoppable 21, which is closing in on 9 million in sales in the U.S. (making our prediction that it will likely become the first diamond record in the states since Usher's 2004 Confessions set on the nose), just blasted past Michael Jackson's 1982 classic Thriller on the U.K. all-time bestseller list, according to NME.

21 is now the fifth best-selling album in the U.K. with staggering sales of 4,274,300 copies since its release in January 2011, besting Thriller's sales by about 500 units.

Her sales are not that far off the next two albums – Oasis's What's the Story Morning Glory and ABBA's Gold: Greatest Hits – on the list either, though she's got a ways to go before she reaches the list's top two spots, which are owned by The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band at #2 (5.04 million) and Queen's Greatest Hits at #1 (5.83 million records sold).

In the 15 months since its release, 21 has spent 65 non-consecutive weeks at #1 in the U.K. and, having outsold Amy Winehouse's Back To Black, is the top selling album of the 21st Century in the country.

Its not about race - its about true greatness.

Let's see Adele have the career Mike had. [img:$uid]http://i573.photobucket.com/albums/ss180/marjanv1/smiley_waiting.gif[/img:$uid]

Its like when people talk about Michael Jordan - Michael Jackson was a great among greats and set a bar when the bar was already high - unlike Adele who is popular when popularity is bought by labels and most of the artists being promoted are shit.

There is a lot of money being spent to keep Adele where she is.

You really want to try and make a case for the material on 21 in comparison to MJ's Thriller? Go right ahead.

In terms of subject matter, 21 is by far more of a contemporary to Fleetwood Mac's Rumours than it is Thriller.

Isn't Adele under a really tiny record label?

Ironic isn't it lol lol

Hmm, I'm not a big fan of Adele, but I like some of her songs .... but as for Janet, she is in my personal top 10 .... top 10 least favorite artists lol , I think her voice is one of the most annoying in music history .... So if you're counting on the defense reaction, it is clearly out. hmph!

When this album came out, I had hopes, but not even in my wildest dreams I would have thought that the post-2004/Post-iTunes generation would appreciate the craft and perfection of this modern gem.

By far the best mainstream album since the early-00's...

Well, to be honest, different people have different perceptions, definitions and parameters of what they call mainstream. I was trying to have a better understanding of what he meant.

I am not going to argue with him about his opinion on what he thinks is "the best" but rather was just trying to understand what constituted the mainstream.

Given the breakdown of way people listen and purchase music these days.................your question is a valid one.

I dont quite understand alot of peoples logic when it comes to threads like this.... disbelief

Okay Adele surprassed Michael by a couple units in the UK.. good for her BUT WHY are people trying to downplay the Thriller album in comparision to Adeles 21 album JUST becaue she surprassed it by a couple of units in the UK?

Everybody is entitled to their opinion. However, I feel that is a bit disrespectful and dumb logic to suggest that Thriller was just a "pop" album when it was much more than that.

I really like Adele. Shes refreshing in this trash music market we have today but personally, I choose Thriller oer 21 any day of the week, so sales really doesnt mean anything.

Thriller is POP album buts its a GOOD quality POP album... Adeles 21 album is NOT a POP album but JUST because its not a POP album doesnt necessarily make it better and just because it surpassed it doesnt really mean anything either.

To be honest, I would be surprised if it didnt being that Adele is a big pop star from the UK anyway...

And just because someone chooses to challenge or question an opinion being made doesnt necessarily mean their fighting or looking for one.. geezz like grow up its a message board people express opinions, people respond to posts etc, move along ...

MH, I'm cool with u & respect your opinon. But you seem to be a bit angry honestly confused

Yes, but come on let's not act like EVERY thread dealing with her sales don't turn to fights? people know what mainstream means. People are just starting fights, people take sales way to serously when they are not the ones being paid or the ones making the sales. Graycap & a lot of them think because there musicians they have higher opinion. And i say so what to them? lol

I play multiple instruments so what? does that make my opinion better HELL NO, just because someone is a musician doesn't mean they should be rude & downplay what others like. Just like Blaque in another thread said all of Keshas fans are trash rolleyes

I dislike her music a lot, but i know people who like her music. Who are smart, intelligent people who just after a logn week of school or work wanna listen to music & dance lol it's just not that serious. And if some people think Thriller is not a good album that's there opinion to, some will like it some won't. But you do and that's all that should matter to you wink
