Does Overexposure Affect Your Opinion? I have been wondering this for awhile, does someone being overexposed and having there fans go crazy over them. Does this ever affect how you look at the music? Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I'm a huge mj fan and love having company when it comes fans, but I would be lying if I said neither media or fans being too defensive (though I have done it sometimes out of caring too emotionally though I also call him out for his shit) has affected my fandom too at some points. I just ignore it all though cause he means something to me, and at the end of the day that's all that matters.
janet, mariah, madonna, beyonce fans have all irritated me, I can't talk to any of their fans at forums and prefer talking to all fanbases of these artists on this music board...though some of you piss me off at times too
But that's an interesting point too cause I've kept saying I wished I was born in the 70's so I could have remembered Thriller mania and other mj eras before though I knew of him since the mid 80's and felt bad for not always knowing everything that came out until 95', just a few songs here and there through other people until I went out of my way to listen to new music. But now I think maybe it's a good thing or I wouldn't have appreciated him as a legend the way I do, cause not going out of my way also meant I didn't hear about rumors even if I wondered about his skin and just moved onto other kid things I was into. I say this now because there are so many 90's artists I loved, but there are plenty I have forgotten about or moved on from completely, and when I hear them, I wouldn't exactly call all of them legends or icons and think that term is thrown around too easily. I find it awful that people call britney an icon for example. And before mj's death, I think liking him might have felt a little rebellious though also depressing, but after it, I felt funny enjoying him with others cause I felt they were not the kind of fan I and other longtime ones were, and that these newbies will never know how much crap we put up with for liking him and now they want to kiss ass. Too much media noise too.....I think I prefer less media noise and though I was always into prince and already a member here, I was continuing to play him more and relate to him, and I was already listening to a few indie artists for a few years and continued that....MIA is cool btw, indie or not, dig her

It affects the fact that I get sick of hearing their hits before owning their discs.

No. It's ridiculous to let anything else affect your enjoyment of the music. I don't care about the artist's personal life, I don't care about how 'overrated' or 'underrated' they are.... all that matters is if I enjoy their music. Though if I have overplayed a song (or album or artist), then of course I'll be sick of them for a while..

Few people would ever talk shit on her if she wasn't popular... same with those who hate Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Radiohead, etc... people just hate that those artists are more popular than the people they like, so they talk shit on them. I know because I used to do it.. I hated Elvis and The Beatles because people said they were bigger/better than MJ. It's stupid to do, though.. you can enjoy an artist without loving them as much as the radio, people on the internet or Rolling Stone magazine does..

There's no such thing as overexposure when it comes to a great act. The "Street Songs" and "Purple Rain" eras were great and I couldn't get enough of them. When it comes to current acts though, any exposure to them is too much. Andy is a four letter word.

[Edited 5/3/12 6:42am] It This is absolutely right. People love to hate on popular acts just because their favorite isn't as popular anymore. You guys think Beyonce gets hate here? Go to a Janet, Whitney, or Mariah forum she's the goddamn antichrist to those people. Even I do it sometimes, but only if I already hate them. It's like this, maybe if Lil Wayne wasn't so popular and on the radio every 5 minutes I'd hate him less..maybe.

THIS
Like i do get a bit annoyed that when it's Prince all i hear is When Doves Cry, Let's Go Crazy or Liitle Red Corvette. or when it's Zeppelin i usually hear Stairway 99 percent of the time
That is of course for older musicians, but it applies to new to. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Certainly. I believe songs like When Doves Cry are incredible but I hate it because I've heard it so much. My dad was a really big Adele fan but now he can't stand her because she's played too much.

I never get sick of Prince's old hits. They always become my favorite thing I will hear on the radio that day.
