I think that contributed to James Brown's downfall actually: the fact that he wasn't hot anymore. I'm sure he was pissed when Bootsy, Catfish, Fred and Maceo went to George Clinton and 'em and got more popular. lol

Well he probaly could've kept some folks if he'd paid them and been less of a tyrant. lol Sometime folks can get caught up in thing they are the end all to be all, NOT. Go ask Berry Gordy. lol

Yup! nod But see that's why his success didn't last as long also. He couldn't keep his behavior, attitude and ego in check. He whupped Tammi Terrell's ass because he felt she was out of line, she went on to sing the most beautiful duets with Marvin and Marvin almost went postal on his ass for messing with Tammi. evillol

"The Great Payback" lol lol lol

Kinda ironic it was James who came up with "The Payback" and yet all those guys he worked and had problems with left and still enjoyed success (some of them anyway lol). lol

Yep. nod A different time no doubt but folks were waiting in the wings to replace yo' azz. lol A lot of the artist of that time kept going (most times to their detrment) out of fear of some taking their spot. It really did matter who you were or thought you were, the talent pool was 6 deep.

Right there and sometimes it also mattered of the company you kept, like if you had a manager that was managing you and fucked you up, there was no way for you to come back even halfway. Someone mentioned James not having good management and that definitely played a role. Matter of fact a lot of shit was going down that fucked with James.

It appears at that time Brown who was pretty disciplined started to come unhinged, what lead to this, I'm not sure. Again a number of factors I would guess.

If you believe certain people, James started to get hooked on angel dust anywhere around the late '60s, mid '70s, late '70s or early '80s...

Yeah especially considering once you're shown on that stuff (as he was in '88), it further ruins your rep... James probably had no idea before he died that his angel dust-fueled interview went viral. neutral It's funny to watch but sad at the same time considering how steep his fall was.
