At Prince.org People spend all their time talking about dumb people with no talent People spend all their time talking about the most beautiful girl in the world when thats bullshit because their are a million better looking naturally attractive women People spend all their time talking about wasted talent People spend all their time talking about sales and chart positions of artists way past their peaked

I love Fiona. I have exactly NEVER heard any of her songs until Idenity posted about her new album and I fell in love instantly. This by far is my favorite song on the album.

yeah, you're right. up until a few years ago i'd come to this forum almost every day to see what other people were listening to and discover many great new artists. people were just posting youtube clips of every kind of music with many great discoveries for me amongst them.
the last year or so tho, it's always about the same dozen people or so. thread after thread on the same groups or persons.
not that i mind that. it's fine. obviously many people like those and want to talk about them. but the variety is gone.
at first i thought 'oh well, then i'll just keep posting my finds or start threads on new music by established artists that i like (like radiohead, bjork, beck, burial etc etc) but there's also just 0 response to such threads anymore.
if anything, it's limited my exposure to new music. sure, you can wade through the waters of the internet, but it was fun to just log on here in the morning and have a couple threads that you could view where orgers had already cherry picked the best stuff for you.

I liked the first 2 records quite a lot. I understand she couldn't be that kid forever, but she has wandered way too far off the reservation for my liking. If she could reel in the warble about, say 80% I might really like this. [Edited 4/27/12 6:20am]

I like Fiona but I see what you're saying particularly as far as the vocals on this. I saw her live recently and she did some other new songs which were a lot better and more accessible than this one. Not sure why this song was chosen as a single. A lot of my favorite from the 90's have as you said "wandered too far off the reservation", people like Bjork, PJ Harvey and even Tori Amos to a certain extent. They try too hard to be avant garde and abandoned what people loved about them and what they do best. I hope Fiona doesn't go the same way.

She's playing at this little venue, which is only a 12 minute walk from my apt. None of my friends will go with me and I don't want to go alone. "Keep in mind that I'm an artist...and I'm sensitive about my shit."--E. Badu

There are still tickets available too. It's an intimate venue so I'd love to go. I've never seen her live but I have all of her CDs and her random tracks/soundtrack cuts. I love Fiona! "Keep in mind that I'm an artist...and I'm sensitive about my shit."--E. Badu

There's a special fun kind of adventure, having the guts to do something alone. You're probably going to rub elbows with like minded souls. I really hope you go.
Having skimmed this song about 7x now, I can honestly say...I'm starting to get it. It's no Shadowboxer, but it is what it is.

Every artist has to make a decision about whether they want to repeat themselves and those before them or push boundaries. Obviously those who do the latter maintain a stable fan base longer and perhaps enjoy more success, but the latter are those that leave legacies that tend to inspire future generations long after they're gone or stop making music. Change it one more time..

This.
At any rate, whatever direction Fiona goes in, I'm gonna 'be there', so to speak. I still think she's just incredibly talented and she's one of my favorite artists, period.

No, actually what leaves a great legacy is making great music. I think it's a misconception that to make great music you have to change for the sake of changing. Most artists aren't good at every genre of music. A lot of great artists evolve and change but within a given genre. You have to know your strengths. Look at someone like Bruce Springsteen. I would say he inspires future generations but doesn't make radical changes in his style of music. The artists that have the most impact have a distinctive style of music that makes them them and that suits them.

What makes something "great" as opposed to just "good"? In twenty years will people consider the catalogue of the Nicki Minaj or the Black Eyed Peas great music?? Probably not, but it sold a shit load, so a lot of people thought it was good. They're not likely to leave behind a musical legacy though (meaning there won't be masses of artists in 2020 talking about how Will.I.Am and Nikki Minaj were their greatest influences as you do the Beatles or Prince).
Bruce is a great musician but you dont hear many younger musicians that become popular saying they're greatly influenced by his music. The most oten cited influences in music were all people that presented something new that blew people away: Bowie, Zeppelin, Sex Pistols, Velvet Underground, Hendrix, Kraftwork, Beatles, Dylan, Prince, Brown, Cooke, etc. So my comment wasnt just that she's pushing her own boundaries of artistic self-expression but that she's doing it AND is still just as talented as she was from day 1. When artists pull this off they become not only liked but respected in their field as "artists". Change it one more time..

Did she hook back up with her old producer from her first album? She could spit on a cd and I would buy it [Edited 4/27/12 18:16pm] 1 over Jordan...the greatest since
