Two dreadful artists, but which one has had the more detrimental effect on popular music?

Madonna the zero talented diva whose inspired many a supermarket shelf stacker because they see a non descript nobody get by for a quarter of a century being obnoxious and demanding way more than her "talent" deserves.

Joe and Joeanne Public embraced Madge because they could be her. Madonna showed us all that you don't need a good voice or require a grasp of song writing, lyrics or instrumental proficiency.

Whitney on the other hand single handedly started the cult of vocal gymnastery. Schreeching, caterwauling, Uvula continously exposed, high pitched plastic emotion beloved of many a Simon Cowell TV programme performer.

So which of these useless female singers has ruined music more?

I think Madonna's had a bigger influence on the music world. Whether it was a good influence or not is debatable..

Michael Jackson. Thriller and Bad, to be more precise, if not the man himself. The schmaltz, the dancing requirement, the heightened expectations regarding what is "success," the multi-year wait between albums, the cult of celebrity and myth-making, the clones, etc.

None of it was bad on its own, but it sure did produce a lot of shitty clones. Madonna and Whitney were just focusing on different facets of the paradigm he created and did something with it.

And before him, disco and funk did a real number on music. The Motown machine certainly played its part as well, along with all the other hit-factories of the day. And the Pat Boones of the world, no doubt. And the Elvis of the early '60s who was no longer a rock 'n' roll singer, but selling boatloads of records by being a movie star playing a troubadour who sang a lot of shlock in a ton of shit films.

That said, all of the things I mentioned added greatly to music as well -- except maybe Pat Boone.

It's just the shit version that ends up dominating, in every aspect when you get to the photo copy of the photo copy of the photo copy of the photo copy and can't see what was great about it to begin with.
