I hate that too, but it happens all the time. Someone will make a post about a new artist's record and someone will say how they never liked them in the first place. Why even come on board? That said, I am gonna gove the new Manson record another go. I was underwhelmed with the first listen. Where do you rank it?

I actually feel pretty good about it so far. I really dig "Pistol Whipped" and "Slo Mo Tion". I think "Breaking the Same Old Ground" is a good ballad - something I always thought he was great at but suffered on the last 2 albums. It's creepy/spooky and his voice sounds great.
I'll need a good few days to really get into it, but the fact I'm willing to give it a few days is good.

I'm excited for this album. I heard a couple of snippets and it sounds like he came back strong on this one. He better had because I think people were starting to write him off. I feel like this is the year for rock! Van Halen, Jack White, Bobby Conn and Marilyn Manson are bringing it. Of course they all have very different sounds but they are all indeed rock artists!! It's about time!

You know, I really like Mechanical Animals a bunch too. Especially tracks like "Great Big White World" and "Fundamentally Loathsome." I enjoyed that whole era. Maybe it's just excitement that its better than his last 2 but Born Villain is really growing on me!

I Am digging a lot of tracks on here!, i am liking it way more than HEOL.
With that being said MA is for sure my favorite Manson album still, but Hollywood is almost there.... GodeatGod, The Death Song & Target Audience are 3 of my top 10 Manson songs for sure. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I always wanted to like Golden Age of Grotesque. There's a few songs on there I really, really like such as "Spade", "(s)AINT", the title track, and "mOBSCENE"....
I think its the first record without Twiggy though? Just wasn't the same and had a buncha filler.

aww but what about Slutgarden? i love the chorus on that:P Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Yeah, that one isn't bad either. It kinda reminds me of "User Friendly" though!

I can understand why people rate The Golden Age of Grotesque as lesser than Antichrist Superstar/Mechanical Animals/Holy Wood but I think it is just barely below them. As an album it probably doesn't really hang together too well but song for song I really dig it. I guess a lot of fans really missed Twiggy but I was impressed by how strong the album was without him. They didn't last long but I feel like Manson/John 5/Tim Skold were a pretty good songwriting unit.

User Friendly is probably one of my favorite Manson songs. "I'm not in love but I'm gonna fuck you till somebody better comes along"

Yeah, I dig it. The female vocals are really hot too.

Another +1 for "User Friendly" here. One of my favorite songs from Mechanical along with "The Dope Show", "I Don't Like The Drugs", "Coma White", "Rock Is Dead".... hell, the whole album is brilliant. I would guess "User Friendly" is probably the song I've played the most from the album though. |

"The Dope Show" is probably in my top 5 of all time. Even though it got massive play on MTV and, for all intents and purposes, should bore me to tears... I can't ever skip it. It's fucking awesome and definitely a classic.

The best part about The Dope Show was it wasn't a "by the numbers" single that Manson started to release (see Disposable Teens, MoBscene, the fight song). I love it when artist do a mind fuck with their first single. It gets me excited for their new vibe. Hell, even the first official single from the new album is by the numbers Manson.

At first I thought "No Reflection" was MM-by-numbers, but the more times I listened to it, the more I love it and I can't get it out of my head.
But I also love "Disposable Teens" and "The Fight Song", so..... |

I don't mind "No Reflection" though it isn't my favorite (that's looking like "Pistol Whipped" or "The Gardener").
ANYTHING is better than "This Is The New Shit" or "Leave A Scar" or "Pretty As A Swastika" (??? lol).

Man the first single from Golden Age should have been (S)Ain't. That would have jump started that album. Spade should have been the second single, then Para-Noir.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yeah, I thought Spade was a no brainer for a single. When it wasn't released, I was disappointed. And I wish an actually interesting video was done for (S)Ain't. The one he recorded with some porn actress in a hotel, beating each other up, etc... Not interesting to me.
That album seemed to have a lot of hype but then was handled completely wrong.

So much Manson talk on the org, this feels weird.
I listened to Eat Me, Drink Me today for the first time in over a year and it is not really that bad it's just that it maintains a fairly average level and nothing really stands out. I don't think any of the songs are terrible but none of them are great either.
I'm mildly excited for the new album but now I feel like I gotta hear The High End of Low too. It can't possibly be that bad, can it?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
It's pretty bad, yes. lol. It's a bit less gimmicky than Eat Me Drink Me. There's nothing offensively terrible on it (other than perhaps "Wow"), its just boring and retread. There is little cause for thinking he had any inspiration at all when making the record. Whereas on Eat Me Drink Me you can tell he's at least somewhat interested in something enough to want to write something clever. On High End of Low, it feels like he is going through the motions and is bored of himself.
Lord knows it shows all over the record. There are 2 songs I think are good. This is my favorite:

I just found a sealed copy of The High End of Low for a little under five bucks, I figure it must be worth at least that much.
Now if he would just compile all of his non album tracks onto a disc I would be all set.

Brians album is not bad at all, I will not be buying it, but i'll take another few listens and maybe pick it out of a bargain bin for £2 in a couple of years. I think i'm getting too fucking old for all this stuff now if i'm honest, all the shouting and anger and shit, it just does my old titties in. Also, much as I like NIN I even find myself turning off their angrier material half way through and find myself more drawn to the later albums (Teeth and Slip) that I find easier to listen to as albums, and Trent and Atticus' soundtrack noodles. Not saying the noisey material is bad in any way, it's fucking great for the most part, but there comes a time when it's like "Oh be fucking quiet."
Good luck to Mr Warner and all that lot though.

OMG, I'm a huge NIN fan. I met Trent in Germany once and he was kind and gracious enough to autograph my ticket.
Anyways, I don't think NIN has had a really great album since Downward Spiral. I liked The Fragile, and Year Zero, but found all the other post-DWS stuff boring.
I wanted to like the material...I just didn't.
I'm not a huge Marylin Manson fan... I like him, but I think his albums have been better by and large. They're more pop than Trent's stuff, but his hooks are great. Mechanical Animals was flawless.

So I just listened to the new Manson again and I must admit I'm pretty impressed by it. The first listen I was just like eh... Now the hooks came out and I think it's he's best since Golden Age. I'm gonna see him Tuesday. Hopefully it will be a good show.

I had forgotten how great the trilogy was but, damn, these are some great albums!
I really don't care much for Portrait of an American Family or Smells Like Children but with Antichrist Superstar he really improved dramatically. Then he went in a completely different direction with Mechanical Animals and made an even better album and then he went in a different direction again with Holy Wood. He really doesn't get enough credit for how great those three albums were or for the risks he took making them. I think it is interesting that he worked with three different producers on those albums and they all have their own sound but they still hang together pretty well as a trilogy.
I'm probably setting myself up for a disappointment but I'm pretty excited to hear the new album. After Lest We Forget I kind of lost interest in him, hopefully Born Villain can draw me in again.
