Interesting blog post.
http://www.showbiz411.com...themselves Madonna’s Numbers Speak for ThemselvesThe Madonna fanatics are going crazy online. They’re not getting it about Madonna’s ticket or CD sales. Let’s address ourselves to the CD sales. As of this morning, hitsdailydouble has counted 54% of the total CD sales in the US. Lionel Richie and Madonna put out albums on the same day– March 26th. This morning, Lionel is at number 1 with 65,000 copies sold last week. Madonna is at number 28, with 2,575 copies sold. That’s including her ticket promotion.
Don’t kill the messenger.
“MDNA” is dead sales wise. Why does no one get this? Her tour ticket sales are better. She has sold 600,000 tickets in the US to about 35 shows. The total comes approximately to $1.4 million. Except for Yankee Stadium, most of the venues seat between 15,000 and 19,000 people. The tour will be a hit, but not a mega hit. There are plenty of tickets for sale, but they will sell closer to the dates– particularly if there are good reviews from Europe and early in the US.
Madonna fanatics can believe what they want, but this is the state of affairs for artists of a certain age. Madonna is doing better than most. But let’s get real. She is old enough to be Adele or Lady Gaga’s mother. And the core fans–the ones who are bombarding my emails–simply have not bought “MDNA” in any substantial volume. The numbers are real and do not lie. If “MDNA” falls out of the top 50 next, where will it be in the summer and fall when Madonna’s actually on tour? Check this captured page for Madison Square Garden in November. I could still buy 10 good tickets in Section 101 at 12:22 am. Case closed. Madonna fans, put your money where your anonymous posts are.

Im surprise that Mraz did that well. I stopped listening to him back in '02.
As for Vadge people aren't going to go to her show to watch her perform anything off the new crappy disc. Like the last decade of her tours they go to see the "greatest hits" and the set design. Its always funny cause so many of my queer associates say "well you don't actually go to see madonna."
N I think Goyte suck. The Most Important Thing In Life Is Sincerity....Once You Can Fake That, You Can Fake Anything.

Does that mean that Lionel's gold now?
I know he's probably somewhere with his accountant going "OUTRAGEOUS! [img:$uid]http://www.mjj2005.com/kopboard/public/style_emoticons/default/yesss.gif[/img:$uid] "

Also interesting is that Adele's climb down is less steeper on Soundscan than it is on HITS. It's still doing 90K. I call that impressive.

ahahah like at the 1985 Music awards when Prince was doing all his weird shit. Lionel just kept syaing Prince outrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrageous Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Lionel has to feel so vindicated. His cd is selling like hot cakes. After all that unnecessary publicity for Madonna. Then she plummets all the way down after only a week at number 1.... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

Mdna is falling badly again with these billboard numbers 21k to 12k
MDNA drops 18-34 on the Billboard 200, with 12,000 (rounded number). Cume stands at around 440,000.

i purchased 'like a prayer' years ago (still have the cassette - CASSETTE! ), and i have a few other singles on my ipod. i was never a huge fan, and still believe that if videos hadn't been around she would have had a shelf life of maybe 5 years (mtv was good to a LOT of peeps). she is genius for hooking up with the right producers who've been able to maximize her fair to middlin' talents, i certainly give her that.
still, i have to say, i was really surprised listening to the snippets of the songs on amazon. there is nothing remotely hummable or melodic, no memorable hooks, nothing. i'm surprised that there were any positive reviews of this album at all. after they dismissed her initially, she managed to outmaneuver the critics, so i guess now they wouldn't dare slam her because she's attained 'pop royalty' status. prince said a writer once told him, writers write for other writers. i guess it's no longer popular among them to slam her or even print the truth, so they hype her instead.
but man, is that cd BAD. | |

Yeah i mean its weird because worldwide she is a relevant artist still but in the usa i dont see the obsession with her sales? i mean she is not a relevant music artist in the states anymore, she really hasnt been for awhile, barely on the last album. So i mean when you look at others from her time, Prince, he hasnt been relevant (and yes im a huge fan) but his relevance in music mainstream died back in 1992, i mean he hasnt had a "hit" crossover, (and im not talkiing lame shit like Future Baby Mama, which was NOT a hit) his last crossover success was in 1995, so i dont get the fascination with "madonna's sales" since she is a 53yr old artist, i mean its not like im going to do threads on Elton John's next album when it barely sells 100,000, while he sells zillions of tickets to shows, so i dont get the fascination with sales on aritsts that really are not chart relevant anymore. Just comparing her to other 50yr olds like the boss is likely ahead of her in th is weeks charts despite havin his album out 2 weeks b4 her. Madonna fans have a habit of rubbing her numbers on ur face and now she is doing badly they dont care about numbers and they also have disappeared

Whatever. She's not hungry. I'm on wikipedia and it says her tour (that hasn't even started) is already #18 on highest grossing tours of all time.
She's making money regardless.

I think it is because of how she was marketed.
Folks were claiming her to be the greatest artist of all time and ranking her higher than her more talented peers. (ex. MJ and Prince).
Now while thats just media b.s. and really doesnt matter, I find her quick drop to be interesting. Your right sales dont mean anything especially for an artist like Madonna but if she was the greatest artist of all time or had a big push for people wanting to listen to her as people were hyping her at the beginning of this era to be, I highly doubt it would have drop so quickly because she had got way more promotion than Lionel.
People say that the only reason why Lionel did well is because of promotion. Maybe that is partially true but I also believe his fans or who ever purchased the album liked it which is also why its doing good as well. Alot of fans of Madonna did not like the album and to be honest, it really wasnt good.
Regardless like some have said, she is going to make big bucks with her tour like she usually does but her numbers show she isnt as relevant as she was marketed to be.

i didn't post anything about her numbers. however, i can understand that there *may be* a correlation in this instance.
leaving aside the fact that she's an older artist whose debut is coming up on 30 years now, and even icons like the stones have been likewise m.i.a. from the charts, to the extent that what i have heard of this album, i am not surprised that it's not selling.
i know that sales don't tell the whole story. there are good albums out there that would be lucky to move 500K. but in this case, i think there is a correlation between the sales of this madonna project and the fact that it just kinda stinks.

again i am far from a "madonna fan" though i have most of her stuff u wouldnt catch me at one of her shows, and i rarely even listen to her stuff new or old. BUT i will say that i dont think it was marketing, though i do feel this album was DOA, mainly because the superbowl was awful, everyone i know liked the old stuff and HATED Nicki Minaj and MIA, i have not heard one madonna fan yet say they liked that song or Nicki Minaj or MIA, they despised both of them. Also the MIA incident on the superbowl was LAME and screamed "desperate" to see this 53 yr old woman performing with a no talent rapper and an artist that is really all hype and nothing else (she was good about 8 years ago), it reminded me of the LAME track of Prince and EVE "HOt wit U" worst Prince song. On top of that madonna is off a major, even though Live Nation has cash, it actually doesnt have it like that to sustain promo for an album, its actually losing money big time on other acts tours the last two years. So i think this record is alot like Mariah's "Glitter" an album that is viewed as a joke (though Glitter is her best one) and will be the brunt of industry jokes though worldwide the album will most likely do a few million, and the tour is gonna bring in money.
As for Lionel, i agree that it is partially marketing, but its also OLD songs, nothing new, and he or his label selected the biggest in COuntry music to pair him with, i mean Rascall Flatts Jennifer Nettles, Tim Mcgraw, Shania, Kenny Rogers and Willie Nelson,Blake Shelton and Kenny Chesney, i mean these are the biggest selling country artists out there and huge album sellers in their own rite. So i think this album being big is a combo of choosing the right country artists and backing that with the Biggest hits of one of the biggest artists of the 70's and 80's it had to sell, just like Rod Stewart Tony Bennet and Barry Manilow doing covers or new versions of their stuff it was a no brainer "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

That's not true, she's still popular in the United States. Its just that people want to see her on tour, not buy a crappy album.

That's an understatement. Madonna's gonna always have an audience to see her on tour. Her new records don't matter to them.
