Whats So Special About Jill Scott??? B4 u hammer me and flame m with yo words, I got a great deal of respect and love 4 Jilly. However, I see alot of ppl giving her props more than she deserve and say that her stuff is unique and I'm like "whats so unique" don't get me wrong yo I like it but I just can't get whats soo unique about it. Everytime I listen 2 it I say to myself "this is philly's soul period and yes its neo-soul alright" but the thing is I'm hearing this from everybody(not from her alone) so why keep hyping her shit when she ain't alone on this.
Now, I'd understand if they said that about Erykah Badu cuz the woman have something thats def DIFFERENT than anything out there. Something you could NEVER label. In my opinion, Erykah can put Jilly on shame anytime she wants to. But I wanna know what I'm missing here?? Like I said whats so special about Jilly. Please,,don't give me corny answers like "everything" or "her whole vibe".

I'm not a huge fan of Jill's. She's OK. I, too, felt like her stuff was generically soulful. She's an OK lyricist. An OK singer, too.
So, I'm going out on a limb and guessing that it has to do with her love for Philly (which helps her with other folks who love that city), her soulful vibe (again, not exclusively hers), her funny and moving poetry (her stuff *IS* memorable), her songwriting (she has some cool hooks), her big-black-and-proud persona (which is refreshing and seldom seen in the music biz). And, last but not least, Jill's a cutie.

Jill Scott singing blows me away, and yes, in a world where rail-thin seems to be in, the fact that she thinks she is the shit is way cool to me. My smile warms my heart and when she sings about love you knows she is in it. I know this explanation is a little simplistic but that's what she does for me.

Jill is very original and her sound was very refreshing. Yeah, she ranks with Lauryn and Erykah in the Neo-Soul Cat. She's a wonderful lyricist. Tina (~!~)

Now, I'm a black healthy looking girl myself and I really like what I'm and I don't wanna change, I just don't walk around 2 everybody saying "I'm a fox, I'm fly and I'm cute" becoz whats the point of saying that?? Self-Love?? Big deal, that should be between you and yoself not between you and the public. Hell, when I see someone talk loud braging about the way they look then I feel there's a "self-esteem" problem. [This message was edited Thu Feb 27 8:54:04 PST 2003 by Harlepolis]

Jill is insanely talented IMO. I like what she's saying & how she's saying. She can SING, she's soulful, spiritual, like a flower w/ sound - her music just makes me feel good. I dig her

If you've seen her live, then that explains it all. Even if she's performing in sweats, she still brings down the house. Speaking of, any word on a new release? "Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!

She's has a dynamic voice. Her Albums thus far have been solid...Not 2 many singers male or female drop a Live cd this early on. Shes got the stuff and has backed it up. I think anyone who feels they sing truly from the soul are doing just that. 4 anyone 2 say shes "generically soulful" missed the boat big time with them off re-mark.
Dig, if Miss Franklin herself the "Queen Of Soul" has given her that endorsement of R-E-S-P-E-C-T then truly nuff said about whos real & isn't. Now understand I'm not saying shes as unique as say Erykah...But who really cares? These are stand alone woman who need not B compared in such a way. When people get 2 comparing and "over analyzing" artist's U truly are turning this into a competition or a race of sorts. This isn't about all that mess...These woman have all answered a higher calling 2 B singers. 4 them its about the pure quality of making soulful music that inspires & moves them and those who hear... nothing corny about that~ Neo-soul I've said i'm not much 4 buying in to these titles but Jill is a very refreshing singer that can "really blow" and send that tingling ass vibe throu U 2 let ya know. I have no problem with her lyrics, like a India Arie, in that poetic sense they float U there lyrics in a way that rides and intertwines smoothly with the sound of the music. Her message is as clear 2 the ear as all them other fantastic voices: Hill/Arie/Stone/Badu etc...Why get so overly picky about a talented soulful lady when theres room 4 all? Who doesn't know shes not the only person representing the Philly sound these dayz...? Everybody out of there right now are adding there own flava 2 that great music citys history* As far as over hyping...well she deserved in my thinking at least one Grammy or AMA etc...But she didn't. So I don't think shes hyped by anymeans. So I show her love or anyone love who are being true 2 themself and create whats pleasing 2 them, but as important they truly have skillz. Shes not some super sexy singer who can milk the biz by fronting in that manner. Shes a Big lady but like Angie Stone they got a booming voice that can't B denied by the shallow minded. And like all these very talented woman they let ya know one thing 4 certain & thats "Black is Beautiful"~ PS. "Hyping her shit" Your a bright sista & are better then that...come on now, We all here dig music not shit*

Hell, I made this thread 2 "get to know about her stuff" betta so It could be easy 4 me to dig her stuff. Maybe my "approach" wasn't all that but my attintions were neva bad. I'm no hater I'm just someone who happens 2 respect the woman but want 2 know what is she saying that make her that "special" 2 you ppl thats all. Someone else ddin't like it too and I could never understand how they could not "feel" this music. The voice, the tunes, the musicianship. What's not to like.Shit..The Way alone and L in E Flat alone is some of the best shit in a decade. That Exoperience new disc side with Gime, Gota get Up etc..I mean damn. These discs are instant classics imo. "Climb in my fur."

Jill Scott is the shit. You have to have seen her live to know how versatile she is. It's all about her stage presence. And her band kicks mucho ass. Did you see her performance with Moby on the Grammy awards a couple of years back? I don't like Moby but it made that song Trouble believable when she sang it.
