Ether was brutal. Takeover was meh at best. Superugly was the kind of retort you would expect from someone who was embarrassed, but too arrogant to acknowledge defeat. imo of course.

Anybody that listens to real MCs knows that Ether was better.

I dont think Ether is the best diss record ever invented but it definitly was lyrically superior than anything Jay threw at him and clearly shows Nas is lyrically more equipped than Jay who solely relies on surface punch lines while Nas as usual digs deeper and makes you think.

Some people say that Ether shows Nas obession with Jay and I dont see that. Its exactly the opposite. Jay came for him first. The point of a diss record is to diss them with factual information or using clever lines to throw stabs. Ether is a very mature, lyrically complex MC diss record.

Superugly and even Take Over is something a teenager would come back with...

Agree 100% I don't get the whole Nas being obsessed with J point of view either. J came at Nas and Nas spanked that ass...end of. I too wonder why J came at Nas to begin with. At the time I thought J was on that King of New York bs, but whatever the case J barked up the wrong tree.

Good music makes me happy.

the forum was ram jammed..likewise with the other hiphop forums and hip hop shows..Ooooh..what an insane time.

the record was insane but not a typical nas joint.

I prefer something like NY state of mind/take in blood etc..

Nas latest joint brought a spark back..

Please, this is just a bunch of homophobic drivel, and a completely unnecessary rant set to a beat.

Less is more, the track goes on forever, to me Nas just ends up sounding like the one who's obsessed.

I'm not gonna say "Ether" sucks or is out of line or anything like that because...it depends on what Jay Z said to him first to elicit that type of reaction out of Nas.

And Nas, from the little I've seen of him on tv and his work, doesn't seem like the type that would just say stuff like that without being provoked into it. Most of his work seems to be really positive uplifting stuff, but like most people...I'm sure he has a breaking point and so he went There on him.

And if Jay Z had it coming... I don't blame Nas.

And Nas definitelly pwnd him...I was reading the Ether lyrics a few posts up and almost couldn't finish it and had to stop myself from cringing. Brutal isn't even a strong enough word.

So yeah - Nas definitely won that lol .

If you think great dis tracks are about making up a bunch of homophobic statements about someone then ether goes in the hall of fame. If you like your dis tracks based more in facts then you have to give the nod to JayZ. Not saying that either one was a documentary in any way... I just thought JayZ tracks had more of an authenticity to them than Nas. But I will admit that I'm in the minority on this one-mosit hip hop fans give it to Nas by TKO.

I gotta find the MTV story to this when they talk about hip-hop beefs because I forgot myself what got Nas to finally respond to him on "Ether". It did seem real personal on Nas' part even if he just made some stuff up.

Jay-Z's diss definitely had more of the facts right than Nas' did. That's partially why, though I love Nas' rhyming, I had to give it to Jay-Z on that back and forth. I think Nas thing was more emotional judging from his reaction to "Takeover" like "are you serious? I'm gonna fuck you up now (figuratively)."

NAS was provoked, Jay pretty much started this beef out of nowhere, Nas kept ignoring it & his people had to pretty much convince him to make Ether.

Yeah I kinda remember that that's what was said about why Nas made Ether in the first place. Nas definitely didn't wanna do it. The Jay-Z beef got to him so bad he almost quit!

Pretty much. All this Jay Z's was better and Nas was more homophobic is bullshit because obviously you either A) are not listening to the lyrics or B) a Jay Z stan. The lyrics are posted on the first page and Nas probably references to that once and thats pretty much it.

Nas stuck to facts as well:

Jay Z did say he was better than Biggie.

Jay Z stole some rhymes from Biggie as well

Jay Z also stole Krs Ones concept for the Blueprint and currently Death of Autotune

Jay Z DID sample one of Nas earlier beats and even mention personal meetings they had and said Jay admired him, I believe that.

Jay Z also is not a battle rapper and just makes pop shit

Jay Z is a sale out

Jay Z is not attractive

Jay Z has always been about bullshit and not on some real hip hop shit...

I think Nas was spot on with the facts...

Jay Z's wack responce to all of that was that Nas sales had dropped since his first album as to show that he dont have fans. Yea he has fans by people who listens to REAL HIP HOP. REAL HIP HOP aint playing on the radio Camel

I think Nas stuck to the facts...

Hot 97 served as judges when jay released super Ugly..Nas won. NY voted for Nas, the majority of the hip hop nation voted for nas. Memphis Bleek gave an interview about how jay felt super hurt when he heard Ether..This was already established that Jay felt very hurt about that one. Blue Print 2 made it more obvious how Jay was hurt..

The Take Over was a dope song and better song than ether..

So yeah, Nas may have won the battle (arguable), but Jay won the war....

Sure Jay is certainly off the reservation now compared to his reasonable doubt days, but no need to hate on his status in the game. Jay could scrap as evidenced by the infamous "pool hall battle" with him X just going at it for hours. Jay killed 50 Cent in one line, "I'm about a dollar, what the fuck is 50 cent?", c'mon now Jay does commercial tracks, yes, but he gets as raw as any of the old heads without question. When I was a fan of rap, Jay was normally in my top 5, so this whole debate brings up memories....

Rap now is no fun, but we are getting sidetracked !!!!

Back to 2001:

Jay did spit truth regarding the whole Carmen situation, making Ether less potent.

"Gotta hurt I'm your Baby Mama's favorite rapper" - Jigga

And more derailment, how did no one mention LL/Cannibus? Certainly one of the best Hip Hop battles ever....
