Do you have a gender preference?

On another thread I mentioned that I have a clear preference for male singers. Someone commented that they had never heard that before. But looking at my music collection on ITunes (not all the music I own but most of it certainly.)

Of the top 30 artists whose music I collect and choose to listen to is heavily male dominated. Of 23 acts/artists with over 100 tracks, there are only four women represented. Only six women make the list. THe Brand New Heavies and Massive Attack use female vocalists but not consistently, otherwise the band are male.

I noticed this tendency in my early twenties. It was also brought to my attention by my Army roommate. (Too Short is an exception, had a chance to grab most of his stuff, which I say I'll weed out later, but he'll still probably be on the list somewhere.)

Top 30 I-Pod Artists April 2012

15481 total tracks

  1. Prince – 2408 (Approx,.not incl. NPG or assoc artists)

  2. Miles Davis - 846

  3. Donna Summer – 352

  4. Eminem – 234

  5. Earth, Wind & Fire – 233

  6. Too Short- 223

  7. Ice Cube – 213 (Excl. N.W.A and Westside Conn.)

  8. U2 – 188

  9. Brand New Heavies- 183

  10. Curtis Mayfield – 178 (excl. The Impressions)

  11. Michael Jackson – 165 (excludes J5 entities)

  12. Sting -159-(excl. The Police)

  13. Whitney Houston -152

  14. Depeche Mode – 137

  15. Otis Redding -127

  16. Peter Gabriel – 127 – (excl. Genesis)

  17. Christina Aguilera - 124

  18. Madonna – 121

  19. The Eagles - 118

  20. George Michael – 112 (Excluding Wham! except Careless Whisper)

  21. Marvin Gaye – 105

  22. Pink Floyd – 104

  23. Massive Attack – 100

  24. Kanye West – 91

  25. Pink – 91

  26. Terence Trent D'Arby – 86 (I just keep it all under one name)

  27. Seal - 82

  28. Steely Dan- 80

  29. The Doors – 80

  30. Me'Shell N'degeocello - 78

So does anyone else notice a preference in gender when it comes to their music choices.

I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Nah.

A year or two or maybe three, I would've said female but lately it's been whatever. I could care less about gender as far as musical tastes go nowadays.

It depends on the mood. If it's late night and it's about to be ON..then I'll play Erykah, Sade, Meshell and Cassandra Wilson. Can't go wrong there.

But there's times when I want to hear something upbeat and funky so I'll go from Chaka to Aretha to The Brides and even Luscious Jackson. Girl power rocks.

Vocally, no. But most of what I've listened to most since the early nineties is various types of electronic and jazz, which are heavily male dominated genres. In the last five years I've been getting more and more into classical, which is dominated by men on the composing side, but about even as far as performance goes.

Now if I think about all the music I listen to most outside of the stuff mentioned above, I'd have to say at least 3/4 of the vocals are done by male singers. But it's not something I've ever conciously thought about. If I like something, I'll listen.

If you just go by quantity of music, it's cleary male biased,

More than 1/2 of my library is Prince and associated artists

more than 1/2 of what's left is Bee Gees as a group, as solo sings (along with their brother Andy) and as writers/producers for others

I used to buy music from a lot of different artists, but more and more those two stuck out as my clear cut favorites. And then teh state of music noticably declined. I do quite enjoy the Adele CD I bought recently.

Im very male oriented when it comes to music. I probably only listen to a handful of women singers. Id say 85% of my music collection is male artist.

No, but I've been exposed to more male music than anything.

This is a great topic.

I got nothing against chicks/birds/hos or bitches but I definitely explicitly/consciously

and implicitly/unconsciously prefer male singers/musicians/artists over heifers. This

is probably because I am one and easily identify with them.

(heheheheh)

lol Right, right. I totally misunderstood what you meant. I didn't at all intend it as a sly insult, done by turning around the negative connotations you used for females so they were directed at you instead. Nope. My reading comprehension is way too poor for that to ever take place.

It could go both ways. Depends on your upbringing. I suspect for most people that it's what they were attracted to.

I'd love to hear some female perspectives.

I also think my preference is separate from my sexual preference. As big a Prince fan as I am, I am not physically attracted him. I collect audio, not video.

There are some guys, Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, who didn't record nearly enough for the voices they have. Their voices turn me on (As does Ice Cube's). As much as I like male voices most don't have that effect.

I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Yeah I do have a preference and it's not intentional. But I just naturally tend to gravitate more toward the work of male artists. I'll probably get slaughtered for this, but usually the male acts just have more diverse, interesting stuff than the females do.

I can't relate to some girl singing about how she wants a guy to pay her bills, and a lot of the other lyrical content that is so prevalent among female acts.

I even prefer male-penned and sung love songs over the work of female artists, because I just relate to them way more than anything written by a girl.

Which is probably weird, because I AM female, but...

Probably just a really ignorant, bad joke on "G"s part.

Trying to say gay women and men aren't 'real' women and 'real' men.

Overall I would guess I slant heavily towards male singers but it varies wildly by genre. I mostly listen to guitar based rock music and in that genre probably 95% of what I listen to features a male singer. R & B is probably close to fifty-fifty but slightly favours male singers. With pop music I am guessing it slants slightly more towards female singers. With jazz it is nearly all female.

I am female and I very much prefer male artists. Their music touches me more and is more intresting to me. Nearly all of my favourite artists are men. There are a few women too who I enjoy listening to, but not many.

My best friend is lesbian and she pretty much stopped listening to men and only listens to women now falloff.

With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! And if, then I hope that I would then have wen in my environment who joins me in the A....

I'm gravitated toward female vocalists, as they tend to be more expressive IMO.

Most of the stuff I have is by male artists. Probably more than 90%.

I've never really developed a deeper appreciation for the more critically acclaimed female artists (Tori Amos, Kate Bush... you know what I am talking about), so if I listen to music with a woman on vocals it's usually some sort of dance pop. I often go through phases when I am listening to some female dance pop artist a whole lot and then I never really listen to any of her stuff again.

I realized a few years ago I prefer male singers. My top faves are all male. I love the old male groups like the four tops, hated the girl groups. And
whenI listen to rock/alternative I typically dont like the bands with female leads.
