Low Key & Mint Condition

These groups came along at the "changing of the guard" so-to-speak. Both on Jam and Lewis' Perspective label, both full bands that wrote and produced their own shit, both funky as all get out, both without record deals now. What do you think their place would have been if they had come along in the early or mid 80's? Would they have been something special? Would they have been just another band? Did we make more out of them than they were just because they were the only real new R&B bands around at the time? Let's discuss their body of work compared to other bands (bar-kays, cameo, confunkshun, etc) and not compared to the other acts at the time they were out. I'm really curious as to everyone's thoughts on this. I's still somewhat split on this myself.

Low Key reminded me too much of Confunkshun. The lead singer even sounded just like Michael Cooper to me. As far as Mint Condition is concerned, I loved them back in the day and I still listen to their music. I bought everything they put out because they were/are real musicians. Had they come along in the early 80's, they probably would have gotten dissed and buried in a sea of popular music and synthesizers just like they did when they came out in the early 90s. Unfortunately, I think a lot of people wouldn't know true talent if it bit them in the ass.

See my take is just the reverse. While I liked both groups, the one I thought "had the juice" was Low Key. True proff sounded like Michael Cooper but then again, Coop sounded like Sugarfoot of the Ohio Players. Don't get me wrong, I like Mint but Low Key could have been a mid range R&B band (like a confunkshun or sos band) if they had been out back in the day. I would add more but my ass is headed to lunch lol

[/quote] See, the problem with Low Key was they came out at a time when twelve billion other r&b bands were coming out. Shai, Portrait, UNV. Had they come out earlier, I agree, they probably would have been bigger.
