Prince made Sheena in2 a sex symbol just like he did Sheila E...It was the same scenario. Yes they both had good careers before him. But Prince took both of them to the next level. Because of that their careers flourished in2 the stratosphere.
Actually I think she bigger and more mainstream before Prince. She had "Morning Train" her #1 single and the theme to a James Bond movie "For Your Eyes Only" which she even performed at the Academy Awards (and was nominated for). That was all before working with Prince. She had that duet with Kenny Rogers that hit too before Prince too.
Exactly, people have been cherry-picking the info and leaving alot out to make a point. Dont get me wrong Prince gave her "sugar walls" and that got her to number 9 and top 5 RB, but the image change had NOTHING TO DO with Prince, people have left out STRUT which was the first single from the "A private heaven" album, that was the dramatic shift for her, and if you search her performances for that song in the time period you see her totally change her look and sound for that whole record pretty much, though it had a ballad or two, it brought in horns and drums and rythym that she had not used prior. To follow up the album Sheena did "DO YOU" with Nile Rodgers which got to gold status but was a huge drop for her, mainly she was getting the backlash of SUGAR WALLS and taking shots from the PMRC and tipper gore for it. YES "U got the look" restored her to the charts but she was hardly a factor in that song, and if we mention "Arms of Orion" which was a minor hit of #35 then we have to mention her ballad "almost over You" from 1983 which got to number 25 and number 2 on the AC charts, and also mention that prince penned ETERNITY for her, and that song didnt chart anywhere and because of that her 1989 got shelved and she got dropped. Then her return came with "Lover in Me" which was number 2 on the charts her biggest hit since "Morning Train" the track 101 was a big dance hit (number 2) but missed the RB and Hot 100 charts totally.
