Prince still put Sheena on the lips of every tabloid & entertainment show when he wrote her hit song "My Sugar walls" & did the duet & video "U Got The Look" with her...Before that she was average at best & just known for her voice & 1981 song "For your eyes only"....

Hey genius..she was a hot commodity even before For Your Eyes Only which is WHY they sought her out to sing the Bond theme.

I've never said anything to you in any other thread, except the Shalamar one, and there was no debate there. You must be talking about someone else.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Yes, Sheena was a star long before Prince met her.

And what a beautiful voice she had...

This is part of Prince's collaboration

no it didn't.

Sugar Walls was her 6th US top 10 hit, it peaked at #9. SHe only ever had 2 other top 10 songs, U got the Look (with Prince) and The Lover in Me (not prince). Her only other Prince written single, Eternity, didn't chart on any chart in any country.

As far as discovering women singers, the Bangles are really teh only ones who evern broke out with a pop music career with a prince song (Manic Monday).

as far as the topic of this thread, it's pretty amazing that Sheena Easton is worth so much, she really didn't have an overly successful career. One #1 song, 7 other top 10 songs, no top 10 albums, her last 5 albums didn't even chart in the US, 4 gold and 1 platinum album. And it's not like she had a huge career outside the US.

I'm not sure about this. Like posted above, she had hits before Prince and I like those much more than what she did after Prince...so the next level? hmmm

Oh no no no, don't lump all of us in with that person falloff

Even I know about the "Morning Train" song and I was born in 1981. I think it's more correct to say that anyone who really thinks that she wasn't a star before her association with Prince, is just incredibly musically ignorant.

"Morning Train" was definitely the song. And yeah if people still think Prince made her a star, they don't know shit about much because all they know is Prince. And that's a damn shame. Even Prince would admit such. lol

Her coupling with Prince was seen as a death knoll among her fans at the time. The backlash that she was working with prince was big. She went from sweet looking innocent girl next door , to vampy trampy rat tail sportin singing bout her box. America didn't like that.

Prissypants turning her into a sex symbol did nothing for her career in the usa.

Glad she invested smartly cause after P her career in music was pretty much over in the states.

Yeah I read on it. Even now hearing "Sugar Walls" I can quite understand why her fan base felt disgusted since her original fan base catered to her adult contemporary style. She did good with R&B audiences (and other audiences) for a while but after the '80s she didn't really recover. She faded after "What Comes Naturally" came out.

I don't know why people think Prince turning her into a sex symbol was actually benefactory or that it was even a successful plot. It's easy for someone to turn another person into a sex symbol. Just wished they did better music than... "Arms of Orion". barf

And lemme add an inspirational quote from M.E.T.H.O.D. MAN:

"Cash rules everything around me, C.R.E.A.M. get the money, dollar dollar bill y'all!" - Method Man (you know since KC likes to post quotes and shit)

Anyways, it was about her making money. No one said anything about Prince. Guess that means this thread's dead so I'll leave others to their own devices on this thread.

you said because of prince her career "flourshed into the statsisphere" when the reality is her association with Prince marked the end of her commercial career.

Just because it's a Prince fan site doesn't mean you're not going to get called on it if you just make stuff up.

"flourished into the statsisphere" I don't see star in that quote....Plus I wouldn't call being apart of two more hit singles the end of someone's career. Her career ending was no different than any other artist career ending in the 80's..

I also wouldn't call anyone washed up that had a top selling tour & winning three more Grammy's & number one album in the last few years either. HATER!...

^^ I don't even know what you're talking about. I joined prince.org in 2002, a couple of weeks before you did actually. Before that I posted on alt.music.prince for about a decade before that. In all of that time, I've never once called Prince "washed up".

As for Sheena Easton, why can't you just admit you were wrong when you said Prince sent her career in the stratistphere? He gave her a hit of her own, had her sing on one of his. There's nothing wrong with that, but don't exaggerate it because this board is full of people who lived through the history and know better.

I think in the long term, sugar walls did more harm than good to her career.

She wasn't a classy sex symbol like Marylin Munroe or a clever seductive sex symbol like Prince, she came across as a bit of a whore under Princes influence (no offence to her)

Good for her. It's important for artists to invest their money wisely, and find other ways to generate income (besides music).Once the hit records stop coming, you gotta have a backup plan.
