Teena Marie music suggestions?

Being a big 80's R&B fan I think I kinda have to get to know Teena Marie. I have heard the greatest hits and the It Must Be Magic cd's but other than that I haven't heard anything else by her. I was wondering if anybody would be willing to shar their favorite Teena jams with me biggrin

If U can track down "Passion Play" it'll be worth the effort! Also "La Dona" is pretty awesome and so is "Sapphire" I'm biased, because I love her whole catalog! But check her stuff out, U are missing out!

If it breaks when it bends, U better not put it in!

Just as Prince has many great songs, so does Teena. So you can pick any album and find gems.

I suggest;

Passsion Play

Ivory

Lady T

La Dona

Irons in the Fire

ThankUPrince!

I just listened to that this week. That song is crazy all night long. Love the album too. The album also has Battucada Suite and You So Heavy. Youtube if you are shy about jumping in.

Where to begin? Teena has easily become one of my fave artists in the past few years. She's one of the few artists whom I can honestly say that I truly love the majority of their material. Very seldomly has recorded a bad song imo. As an artist and songwriter, she is grossly underrated. Many of her songs are like poetry. She wrote such vivid, beautiul songs.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand, if I had to reccommed Teena music to someone, I guess i'd break it down like this:

Favorite Uptempo Teena songs:

-Behind The Groove

-I'm A Sucker For Your Love

-It Must Be Magic

-Lovergirl

-Trick Bag

-Square Biz

-Ask Your Momma

-Work It

-365

-Emerald City

-Revolution

-I Need Your Lovin'

-Midnight Magnet

-I'm Still Lovin' You (One of her better later songs if you ask me)

-Call Me (I Got Your Number) w/Rick James

Favorite Mid-Tempo's:

-Deja Vu (I've Been Here Before)-Beautiful melody, beautiful lyrics, beautiful vocals. Just a great song.

-You Make Love Like Springtime-One of her best.

-Aladdin's Lamp

-Ooo La La La

-Turnin' Me On

-Batucada Suite (Nice latin vibe to this one)

-I Love Him Too

-Wild Horses

-How Can You Resist It (A different kind of song for Teena. Guitar driven, interesting lyrics. Great and very underrated)

-Can't Last A Day w/Faith Evans

-Just Us Two

-Love Me Down Easy

-Shangri-La

-Cruise Control-A Very nice duet with Smokey Robinson

-Shadow Boxing

-Stop The World-Wonderful percussion. An excellent song. A MUST listen.

-Harlem Blues (Nice cover)

Favorite Ballads:

-Portuguese Love (Classic that you already know of. I don't need to say anything about this one)

-Fire & Desire (Again, nothing needs to be said about this one)

-Irons In The Fire

-Young Love (Just a lovely song)

-Where's California?

-Dear Lover

-Cassanova Brown (STUNNING SONG! It's like 5 songs in one. I can't say enough good things about this one. This song is genius, period!)

-Tune In Tomorrow (See comments above. Almost as amazing as "Cassanova". A great, jazz feel, some cool scatting by Teena and incredible vocals. Another brilliant song by Lady T).

-I'm Gonna Have My Cake (And Eat It Too)-Classic from her first album

-Yes Indeed (Some of her best vocals ever)

-Sunny Skies

-Out On A Limb

-If I Were A Bell

-Too Many Colors

-Don't Turn Your Back On Me

Albums in order from fave to least fave:

#1)Irons In The Fire

#2)It Must Be Magic

#3)Robbery

#4)Wild & Peaceful

#5)Lady T

#6)Emerald City

#7)Starchild

#8)Naked To The World

#9)Sapphire

#10)La Dona

#11)Congo Square

#12)Ivory (Her weakest album to me although there are a few gems as always on here from Teena)

-I've heard a few tracks from "Passion Play", it's the only Teena album I don't own, but I will buy it eventually.

Great list. Out of 12 albums my list would only differ in Congo Square and La Dona being somehow higher; but that would mean that some would need to be lower and there is the rub.

The first album, "Wild and Peaceful" is perfection from start to finish. From funk, to disco, to slow jams, and even a sexy jazzlike track.

Andy is a four letter word.

I think Lady T and Irons In The Fire are her best albums. She made her finest music when she was with Motown.

Just saw her perform Young Love on Soul Train in the Centric TV show about her. She had on the It Must Be Magic Album cover dress on a year early.

And she is cute here: http://www.youtube.com/wa...QyRbCfYXioqueen
