Dinah Washington - The Good Life
CD 2007 release.
I was coming back from a trip Sunday and I noticed some one had written in white chalk, "This Bitter Earth" on the back window of their SUV. I'm not sure what the context of that meant, but I hadn't listened to some Mother Washington for a while so she' back in my rotation.
This song brings back some memories for me. The recording of the "Good Life" was recorded two weeks before Ms. Washington's death. "Blues Before Sunrise" dejay, Steve Cushing had dedicated 3 years of playing everything Ms. Washington ever put to vinyl and this song was played one week before the end of the profile of her entire discography.
This song, "Good Life" was never released during Dinah Washington's life but it appeard in a 1973 vinyl box-set, "Echoes of An Era: Dinah Washington Years", later apart of a compilation 2007 CD, "Music For Lovers and a box-set by Roulette label. Personally I thought she snatched Mr. Tony Bennett's song away from him. Listen at 1:52 onward, my goodness. She along with Carmen McRae were the only two artist I thought could do a Billie Holiday song any justice.
