Damn, it's been 15 years since Biggie died Time fucking flies. "Juicy" can still get the party started like none other. He wasn't the great rapper ever, but Biggie had that x factor and who can forget that mouth breather better known as Diddy all up in his videos. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

I love Pac and Biggie. I love Pac more of course - that's my boo 4eva and always.
My question is.....
would their deaths be as big of a deal had they died some other way? What if Biggie had a heart attack or 2Pac died in a car crash? I think the fact that they were murdered makes their passings more important to us. I mean look how fast people got over Heavy D and Nate Dogg's deaths. Not saying that Heavy and Nate were as popular as Pac and Big but they most certainly impacted the rap game & sound and Heavy especially was a trailblazer. Wasn't he the first overweight rapper that had sex appeal? Nate's smooth voice made rap more appealing to the ladies. He helped many a rapper get some extra panties to drop. I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!
RIP Dick Clark, Whitney Houston, Don Cornelius, Heavy D, and Donna Summer.

Pac and Big died when they were in the prime's of their career. They were also the two hottest rappers out at the times of their death, in a media driven East Coast vs West Coast war.
I love Nate and Heavy D, but they passed in 2011. They weren't really making music, their time had gone, they weren't the hottest rappers in the game, no East Coast vs. West Coas beef.
Had Heavy passed in 1992, thing might have been different, who knows. PRINCE: Always and Forever

R.I.P B.I.G. As far as gansta rap goes, 2Pac and Biggie are the only ones I really like. And I love them A LOT! His songs are so timeless, so different

No I don't think their deaths would be such an issue if they'd been natural or even drug related. The Black community never lionized dead musicians a la "the 27 club" as White folks did. This sitch was different tho...and part of it was very much down to the general condition of the community at that time. Add to it their very young ages, 23-24 and the awful/scary fact that BOTH of their muders were unsolved. It was a combo of many things.
Thinking back on that era, it was so odd that a bunch of fairly middle-class musicians were acting like they were actual Gambinos. It all got so delusional/paranoid/self-asorbed and not just w/ the acts either, but certain parts of their fandoms.
I guess people are still fixated on how such a thing could have happened and what the hell was wrong in our community/society that something like this could go this far. One thing's clear tho, nobody knew just how dangerous they game they were playing actually was.

Yup. Recall that interview Biggie gave talking about how afraid he was?! Man, that was just like and the sick part was that he was very right to be afraid. Poor guy was waving the white flag and still got killed in cold blood.
If Heavy had died a VIOLENT death based on his music/fans/media, it would have stunned people back in '92! Shoot we were stunned by the Dr. Dre- Dee Barnes incident...so murder was way beyond enything anybody really thought of. The rap game had changed so much even from '92 to '94 that nobody would have even thought something like that was poss before it actually happened. [Edited 3/9/12 21:38pm]

I think had Heavy D die as violently as Jam Master Jay, his death would've been more profound. Like JMJ, Heavy D showcased a positive uplifting exterior and his music was uplifting and positive. Because he died of health issues (like Nate Dogg and even Eazy-E), it's one of those "rest in peace" things for a moment and then "it's over". Also add that Heavy D hadn't had a rap hit since 1997. I'm still distrurbed by JMJ's death to this day.

Yes...not to mention he (ie Heavy D) was much older than either when he died.
JMJ came not too long after the Biggie-Tupac thing, so for a while there it kinda seemed like there was open season on rappers. A few more have been killed too. Even tho JMJ wasn't on top when he got killed, it was still HUGE news. Like you, many are still not over it because it was so foul. He's another that's unsolved IIRC.
In retrospect, that whole era was a disaster for the rap game if not to a lesser extent the Black community and the music industry as a whole. Chris Rock was not far from the truth when he semi-joked that all you needed to do to get away w/ murder was to shoot somebody and leave a rap demo tape in their pocket.
I will say Easy E's death was a huge deal too because of how suddenly he died and what he died of. Easy's death brought a lots of discomfort about sexuality and stereotypes out in the open. He was a kind of Biggie-Tupac, but just from another angle. [Edited 3/9/12 23:15pm]

True. | |

Now that I think abou it, Easy was probably the 1st "hetero" celeb to die of AIDS. Back then, people still thought of AIDS as a gay/bi thing OR IV drug users. Easy certainly wasn't the latter, so...?
Yupper, that one blew the lid off too.

i hate Juicy, but Biggie had the it factor and XL swagger. would've been interesting to see how he evolved over time as far as his content.

Biggie had good music before his death, but my generation will never trace it back to DeBarge, Isley Brothers and James MTume though it gets people to dance. I remember it was sad when he died but not too many were surprised since 2pac was 2 months earlier and we all wondered who was next and Snoop Dogg was on the list. But the new music came, Hypnotize was everywhere as was Mo Money Mo Problems and it was like he didn't die cause it wasn't like I grew up with him and only knew of him since mid 95' and was continuing on. I still hear those at clubs and parties a lot
2pac has really aged well and sounds great on the radio alongside other hip hop, I hope his estate releases more music. His lyrics really make you think, he was intelligent and I remember loving his book, the one with poems from his childhood. His death was a shock to many from what I heard and saw around me then, I had only started listeing to him a few months before that when California Love became a hit and I thought my cousin had a really cool t shirt of his and I found it fascinating that he had songs with videos that foreshadowed his death and playing them. It's like he knew. [Edited 3/11/12 5:18am]

What we DO know is that it seems to be a fact that Easy died of AIDS. But to be fair, can we say for sure that we know with certainty what his personal sexual activity may or may not have included over the course of his lifetime, or for that matter; whether or not he had EVER shared a needle with anyone during the administration of an IV drug, even ONCE?
In any case, may Biggie, 2Pac, and Easy be resting peacefully, far from the cares, worries, or concerns of this complex world.
