I actually can't stand this song. There's something really off about it; could be the percussion or those dated whizzy synths OR it could even be her flat, dull delivery. I just never dug it. It's a strange-sounding kind of mess (to MY ears anyway.) Nancy and all that craziness around her doesn't really jibe, however, I DO LIKE the funky swirly saxes and whacky horns; there's a cool degree of ambiance in them. The African scatting dude adds something special to the mix too. All in all, and for THAT TIME PERIOD, it was way ahead of its years.
I can't, however, get enough of "I'm Gonna Let Ya" from "Music on My Mind (1978) or the masterful "The Sadness in My Eyes" from "Take My Love," her Capitol swansong from 1980. She seems to have a limited range vocally and it could be that she just chooses not to fully utilize it for the true power it probably has. [Edited 4/13/12 20:44pm] Hungry? Just look in the mirror and get fed up. | |
