Did En Vogue Really Have Any Competition?

Other than TLC and maybe SWV, who was really giving En Vogue a run for their money back in the 90s? Seems like most of the R&B girl groups back then were just 1 and 2 hit wonders. neutral

No one really. The only female group I can think of that was in the same league was Brownstone.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Not really. They were technically the only superstar girl group of the '90s unless you count TLC but TLC came as a different type of group. SWV kinda tried to compete with TLC but had En Vogue voices (well kinda lol).

Yeah and even their tenure was REAL short lived.

fishslap Timmy. No sir. hmph! SWV was no where near strong with the voices like En Vogue was. Not saying SWV couldn't sing, because I do believe they could, I just think they were a step below the Funky Divas.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

As far as 90's R&B girl groups go:

First was En Vogue, En Vogue's career slowly got taken over by TLC who's career (sadly) was taken by them from Destiny's Child.

Jade's vocals were solid but then again En Vogue would demolish them. evillol Only thing REAL special about Jade is that after they got some fame, they adapted dooky braids, their hair was in a perm when they initially came out. lol

Okay well, I had to take a few seconds to think about Jade. For real, I think Jade could sing better than SWV could...BUT that gangsta look was just not working.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Y'all didn't like them dooky braids on Jade? I loved them. Made them look like whatshername from Boyz N The Hood. Their vocals really were solid. They should have been bigger. sad

Don't get me wrong. I dig Bey and Kelly. As overxposed and fabricated as Bey can be, I still dig her and am glad for the mark she made on the industry BUT....

had TLC not disbanded due to the untimely death of Left Eye, ole Destiny's Child would have gone the way of Blaque and Total. Jus sayin'.

Even though I was in middle school when that big box braid look was in, I still thought it was kind of ugg.

TLC won in the end. They kicked En Vogue's ass, and were still on a roll around the time Destiny's Child blew up. Left Eye's death killed the group.

TLC beat them with success but I dunno I am kinda torn between the two. What is incredible about both of them is the fact that they both were so creative and unique. Each of the girls in the group broung their own personality and vocals to the group unlike a group like Destiny Childs that was mostly cented around Beyonce, not necessarily a group with different personalities or pushed the envelope creatively. I think for me thats why TLC and Envogue are the best modern day groups. NO other MODERN girl group touches EnVogue vocals and I LOVE TLC but nobody touches them vocals wise they all could SANG. I think TLC and Envogue have the strongest body of work.

HEY! Why ain't nobody mentioning Xscape? lol

I find it amazing how influential and respected En Vogue were after basically falling off after only two (hugely successful) albums. After that they started to replace members and stuff just got sloppy. Vocally nobody was messin with the original En Vogue, maybe SWV.
