Do you think any neo soul artists will be inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame?

Esp considering that it is a popularity contest where Jann is concerned

Erykah, really? Not so sure. Is Chaka in the Hall of Fame?

Lauryn definitely. Her album was/is a classic.

I doubt it, I see polka or opera getting in first. lol A good way to judge who is more likely to get in the Hall, is by the kind of coverage and writeups (or lack of coverage) an act gets in Rolling Stone magazine. RS is more partial to classic rock than anything else, because the folks who started it are baby boomers. Other ways to determine a performer's likelyhood would depend on how popular an act/song was on the Top 40 pop charts. If they were just popular on the niche charts in Billboard (country, R&B, dance, jazz, adult contemporary, classical, etc.), that is more likely a way not to get voted in.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I can see Maxwell or Badu.

D'Angelo and Lauryn Hill, could have been something. Hill has a bettr shot as part of the Fugees' than as a one album solo artist.

I think it was but its not a mainstream genre. I highly doubt a neo soul artist would get inducted just because of that fact.

However their are quite a few that I think should that have mostly already been named

Great & interesting question. I think a few have a chance.

Erykah Badu and/or Maxwell will get in with one more great/innovative album -- something at the same level of the Baduism, Mama's Gun, or Now. Barring that, I think Badu has the best chance because her stuff is more innovative than Maxwell.

D'Angelo and Lauryn Hill need to put out more music to have a chance. Both have great albums, but nowhere near enough material to get in the hall.

Jill Scott has the best voice of all the neo-soul acts arguably, but her songs are a bit generic. She's gonna need to release a couple of albums as good or better than her first.

Dwele, Goalele, John Legend, and the rest aren't even close based on their careers so far, and I say that as a fan of their music, but a realistic fan.

I seriously do NOT understand the fawning over the RNRHF that this site seems to have for it. It's been BS since the day it was founded and continues today. Its getting to the point where its better NOT to be in that lame institution. confused

But did Neo-soul have any big pop crossover acts? Pretty much all of the R&B related acts in the Hall had mainstream popularity (Aretha Franklin, Jackson 5, Smokey Robinson) or were early influences to rock music, like blues and rockabilly performers. I don't think Neo-soul gets much coverage in Rolling Stone. Neo-soul mostly gets played on Adult Urban stations, not really a format RS or any other mainstream magazines cover. If pop R&B acts (Billy Ocean, Luther Vandross, Lionel Richie, Sade, Whitney Houston) that had mainstream Top 40 popularity are not in, then Neo-soul has no chance at all. Jann and his crew are more likely to put in New Jack Swing acts, and that's not happening either. There's many actual rock acts not in like Rush, Kiss, Iron Maiden, etc.

Do you need to have a huge body of work to get in? Robert Johnson doesn't have that

He's a big influence on rock music, as rock came from the blues. Many 60's era rock acts, especially British Invasion, talk about Robert Johnson. Percy Sledge (in) only has one big pop hit, but Johnnie Taylor, Tyrone Davis, & Teddy Pendergrass (all not in) have many R&B hits. Only being popular on a non-pop chart doesn't really count. It's not mainstream popular. That's why some R&B acts started making music designed to crossover. Motown did this, but other R&B labels like Checker, Malaco, and Stax wasn't as interested in crossover, and their music wasn't diluted R&B. They weren't trying to be "The Sound Of Young America". They were "The Sound Of The Juke Joint". lol

I can only see Erykah Badu getting in but right now to me she no longer classifies as "neo soul". Guess she's more of an alternative "urban" musician now.

WAR would probably get in. They've shown how pissed off they were this year. If they're smart, they induct them in 2013 or else lol

Dont knock the Killer. Jerry Lee is an absolute legend and fully deserves his place in the RRHOF.

Here we go again people whinging ...ohhhh the artists I like are not in the RRHOF so the whole thing is crap.

Please. RRHOF is great. People who disagree should pick up the 9 dvd collection available at places where you get dvds lol.

I really hope Hill Billy Jim or Norman Smiley get into the WWE Hall Of Fame lol
