Any Scritti Politti Fans Here?

I pulled this CD out today and it was like listening to it for the first time. What a great album and production by the late Arif Mardin!

My 2nd most favorite album ever, behind Parade.

Perfect Way, Hypnotize, Wood Beez, Absolute, Don't Work that Hard...all the songs are PERFECTLY produced. I LOVE Garth Greenside's lyrics. Especially in Absolute. Absolute is my FAVORITE song from the 80's. This album also got me reading on the capabilities of the Fairlight CMI, which I believe is the system they used for the album. The layering on this album is crazy. It's a masterpiece smile

Miles also covered "Perfect Way" on the TUTU "album"...

Green Gartside also contributed BV's on a track from one of Kylie Minogues better albums "Body Language"...

Lovin' Green Gartside... "Wood Beez" is an all time favourite

yeah, perfect way was on tutu. it was human nature and time after time that was on your under arrest. marcus miller who produced tutu plays on cupid 85 and provision btw

it would be nice to have 2cd deluxe editions of those 2 albums with all the 12" tracks and b sides and maybe some demos and stuff. the current cds have some bonus 12" tracks but there were more on the actual 12"s

I forgot that Scritti's producer, arranger, and Keyboardist, David Gamson, was also a producer on the first two Mesehell Ndegeocello albums....

Scritti are one of my favorite bands of all time and David Gamson is one of my all time favorite keyboardists. I found out that so many songs I've loved over the years, have been worked on by him, like all the best songs from Roger's "Bridging The Gap" album, Tony LeMans album, "Sunny Hours" by Long Beach Dub All Stars & Will.I.Am, and some of the songs on Ke$ha's recent album like "C U Next Tuesday", which while I'm not a massive fan of hers, has amazing production. He also played on Chaka's "I Feel For You" along with my other favorite synth player of all time, David Frank from The System.

David Gamson also does a lot of production work with Oliver Leiber, son of Jerry Leiber from Leiber & Stoller, who is also playing now with FDeluxe and Mazarati and used to be with Ta Mara & The Seen.

Totally forgot about this, explains why these two (and "Cookie...") are my fave me'shell albums!

On another note (excuse the pun) regarding SP musicians, Simon Climie who was a session player on Cupid & Psyche '85 went on to form...yep - Climie Fisher with the dearly departed Rob Fisher and is a well established songwriter in his own right...

Indeed. Slightly more prominently in the US mix unless my ears deceive me. That's where the Scritti/Roger association began smile

I think that "Perfect Way" was and is compelling song,

in all its elements. Very danceable, positive,

melodic, catchy. The overall feel is really great.

The music for each tune on the rest of the album

is also top quality in composition and execution.

The instrumentation is at least as good, maybe even better

than that from any band/solo artist in this synth pop/synth dance etc. category

from that period.

There is one significant albatross

for each of these songs and that is that the vocals

sound like the very juvenile, almost babytalkish tone of voice that stereotypically

used to appear on "Children's music" albums in the 70's and 80's.

This flaw certainly is the issue that separated

the tunes on LP, the LP itself and the limited radio success

of Scritti Politti, from other very similar bands that had better commercial success.

Those bands include Laid Back, Depeche Mode, A-Ha, Wham, ABC, Wang Chung,

Heaven 17, to give only a few of the more obvious examples.

I do not know if still appears on Itunes, but a few years ago (2009?)

when Itunes seemed to exclusively use the All Music Guide

critics for explanations and analsysis of individual albums,

the critic's review of this LP was quite positive and enthusiastic overall and for several songs.

I like Scritti, but Iam more impressed with David Gamson though. Got some of his stuff he produced or helped write in the 80's and its always pretty good....

With Ollie Leiber....

Just co-writing here and keyboards, but its basically Luther doing the Scritti sound in the late 80's...Luther probably just told Gamson, "gimme your sound" LOL....great track....

And I really liked his work with Donny Osmond. "It's never too late" is gorgeous and has killer percussion, but it's not on youtube, so "Make it last forever" (not a Keith Sweat cover LOL), with lush strings by Jerry Lubbock (who else?), lovely arrangement....
