scriptgirl said: Why put "read" in quotes. I am not making it up, I did read it and yes, I have heard the term was around before Kedar, but at the time I didn't know that I let my bandmates read this thread and my bassist had a point "sometimes you can change a persons mind if they "read" it...even if you "lived" it.... There's a fear that history will be changed (that damn Wikipedia)..especially with music... Rap didn't begin with Run-DMC...stuff like that For instance Reggaeton was invented by Black Panamanians not Puerto Ricans But the point is immaterial now and like my bassist said "Leave her alone, you might've met her at The Black Lily and dont even know it"....lol

Wow ,I had no idea that term was being used in the late 80s/ early 90's, besides The Brand New Heavies who else did the industry people consider to be in that category back then?
I'm in the same boat as scriptgirl btw, I remember first hearing that term my senior year in High School, 96-97, when Badu and Chico Debarge's albums both came out. Any act that was "organic"...live instrumentation at that time could've gotten that tag....ToniTonyTone for example R&B was becoming so digitized at the time and that's how they distinguished the two sounds

I'm another person who didn't know that the term was used before Kedar in 1995/96. Has anybody written about the earlier origin of the term? That would be interesting reading. [Edited 4/11/12 12:11pm] "Love & honesty, peace & harmony"

Yeah that would be real interesting because I don't believe "neo soul" started with D'Angelo and Erykah...
