Lionel reunited with the original bass player and guitar player of the Commodores and performed full Commodore concert

They're the ones not in the current Commodores and haven't been in the group since the early 1980s'. I think they left after Nightshift. The Commodores now are a trio with non official backup musicians. I don't think they record though, only do oldies concerts.

Do you consider what Madonna did real sales? She bundled and Lionel didn't, and he did really well with considerably less promotion/fanfare then Madonna. I am not mad at anybody's hustle, especially the older artists, you got to do what you got to do to make it work.

Also, i am kind of confused by the bolded statement above, what exactly hasn't Prince had since 1984?

I disagree. Lionel did a HELL OF A LOT OF PROMOTION. He was on the CMA's to intro the album to start a buzz and performed with Rascal Flatts.

He also did The Voice, sold copies on HSN with a "concert" and pitching sales. He then hit all of the major talk shows to perform with the different country acts. Not to mention all of the radio and print things he did for the album. So, Lionel did his fair share of promotion. Madonna just beat him (which is understandable since she has a bigger built in fan base).

Yeah, because folks who are putting out $$$ to buy Madonna concert tickets (i.e. her die-hard fans) would never be expected to purchase the album if it wasn't coming in the mail to them.

Prince did the same thing but i never considered them sales prince was in the top 5 for seven months it hasnt happened since 1984 those were never real sales

Prince wasnt a sale because he phrased it as a "Giveaway" there wasnt really a charge for it, this is worked into the sale. Also Prince benefited big time from everything that was happening around him, 20th anniversary of PR, the grammys performance with Beyonce, the RRHOF show, and countless guest spots on Leno, Ellen and others when TALK SHOWS helped sales big time, so Prince had alot of things going for him, Madonna in my opinion has none of that going on plus its 8 years later and album sales are down 60-70% since that time period. Not taking anything away from either one, the fact that madonna, lionel prince etc...still can get 100,000 to come out week one and buy their work 30 years after they came out, in Prince's case, almost 20 years since he had a hit single, so i cant take anything away from any of them, everyone has a selling point, i mean, we are complaining because people want to see her in concert? Rihanna and Katy Perry sell 7 zillion downloads and cant sell out Radio City with cheap tickets.

I don't think Walter Orange even drums in the group now and just sings.

prince also priced it into the tix he used the same language too plus madonna hasnt sold 360k in 12yrs when she had hit singles. here she has 2 flop singles and i am not surprised it only sold 174k. she hasnt had a top40 airplay hit in 10yrs too.

Like prince madonna has a high demands for his tixs where ppl mostly want to hear old material buying tix doesnt mean u want to buy the album.

Industry insiders had projected madonna will sell around 200k months back . plus she didnt do any real promotion since the superbowl. lucky for her she had massive pre-orders during the superbowl of 50k if she hadnt done the superbowl i suspect she would have done 25k less.

plus next week the sales drop of 70% will confirm any doubts.

Plus prince "sold" 2mil cds this will barely cross 1/2 mil in so called "sales"

superbowl is a huge one event compared to all the smaller events prince did at that time

So I paid for this album 6 times last week. And not one of them came from a concert ticket bundle, because I have not bought any tickets.

Once for my Super Bowl iTunes deluxe pre-order with the bonus track. Once on iTunes as a gift to my sister. A physical copy of the deluxe explicit version. Once through Smirnof for the Nightlife Edition. Once to have the standard explicit version on my shelf. And once to have the clean deluxe version from Wal-Mart.

By your logic, 5 o them don't count and she only made one sale to me.

Hmmm.

can u explain how prince achieved his sexy "sales".

Having strong demand for tix isnt same as selling ur new cd most ppl dont care for new material and fans like u already buy 5 times that means the total number of true madonna fans is below 100k

I dont think we can compare the promo that Prince was doing in 2004 to Madonna's now. I mean im a huge Prince fan more than Madonna, i mean i love the man, but, i cant deny that he was everywhere he needed to be for Musicology, and there were alot of people that didnt even know they were getting a cd with the ticket, Madonna has it known, Prince fans knew, but the average person jumping back on the Prince wagon could care less. NOW the almost 2 million real sales Prince did was a testament to his takeover, he had it all over the place, it was 1984 for him all over except now he was accesible, in 1984 he didnt really talk. He had it all timed right,as he even said, the Hall of Fame show stealing, the grammy show stealing, the vh1 webster hall show, when MTV was relevant, leno and ellen when they were relevant to sales, Madonna's superbowl appearance sparked nothing but maybe some catalog interest, football fans could care less about her. Plus the performance was 3 months before the album, Prince's stuff was 3 minutes before. PLUS Prince had a major up his ass to do Promo, SONY was not letting him coast, like Jive did with Rave, LIVE NATION for Madonna is not a label, its a strong entertainment push and adverstising and tour funder but it has no music sense whatsoever, HAD Prince been pushing Musicology on NPG records and distributed on Redline, like Rainbow Children, he would have seen numbers like Rainbow Children pulled in 140,000 after a year.

so from 140k to 2 million just shows how much distortion this kinda promotion creats. not only for prince but also madonna and it in effect cheapens the charts. The pre-orders for mdna from first weekend of the superbowl were 50k and the mdna was on the front page of itunes for the last 7 weeks too with a count down clock all paid advertisement.

The rules have changed now too u have to opt in for the promotion but to make this a success madonna gave away 22 vip pit tix to each of her concerts if u opted in and each person was allowed 8 cd per person. All this of course is causing all the distortion.

The second week of mdna is lookin very bleak and it will likely not even be in the top 10 and the promotion will likely only add 200k but the real over all sales r looking not to exceed 400k in total.

Just creates alot of distortion in the first week and steals the #1 and after that is a bust.

prince had no business being top 5 for 7 months and madonna has no right being #1

This isnt about madonna of course her fans will rub u the wrong way with all their numbers.

Its about fairness coz charts r like a measuring stick and if they get distorted and manipulated and its best for every one to speak out even madonna fans about such practices

I agree.. I wanted him to have the #1 album, just because I know he stands no chance of ever having a #1 album again. This is his first hit album in 26 years. And it's probably only a hit because he got every huge country star to appear on it.

Madonna didnt have a top 10 hit. They BOUGHT promotion for the superbowl which resulted in the airplay for 3 days. the rest was digital component which led to a brief sales pike and the song quickly disappeared and the second single didnt even get miniscule airplay.

M hasnt had top 40 airplay hit in about 10yrs

still it was on billboard hot 100 whether or not she hasn't had a top airplay in 10 years it still counts for the billboard hot 100.

To be fair both these album are going to drop in the next week. I know Lionel's album is going to go LOW next week. So he should enjoy this number 1 while he can lol

Madonna will fall off quick to, but hey i don't think that's bad, 8 number 1 albums is great. And even though i disagree with ASG about the top 10 thing... i agree a lot of promotion & the superbowl helped the single get top 10.

Bit i doubt any of the other singles while reach top 40, hell I see a lot of gay clubs playing Girl gone wild but have not heard it once on radio lol
