As far as 90's R&B girl groups go:

First was En Vogue, En Vogue's career slowly got taken over by TLC who's career (sadly) was taken by them from Destiny's Child.

Don't get me wrong. I dig Bey and Kelly. As overxposed and fabricated as Bey can be, I still dig her and am glad for the mark she made on the industry BUT....

had TLC not disbanded due to the untimely death of Left Eye, ole Destiny's Child would have gone the way of Blaque and Total. Jus sayin'.

Wasn't EnVogue's career practically dead and gone by the time Destiny's Child came out in the late 90's anyway?

But to answer the question: Nah, as someone listed earlier, there were mad groups out but they weren't any competition. Especially vocally. EnVogue's greatest strength was that all four could sing lead if needed but they all harmonized the hell out of a song together lol

Yea thats what I think and I really LOVE TLC and Envogue but no other girl modern day group touches En Vogue. ALL the girls could sing. Like Beyonce, Destiny Childs were way overrated even though I will take them over solo Beyonce anyday. They just seemed so manufactured, overly sexual and nobody had personality. They were just backup singers for Beyonce. I always liked Kelly though and preferred her singing.

En Vogues run was a bit over the late 90s and I agree with Hotgritz. If Lefteye had not passed away and the group had not broken up they would still be the most successful girl group hands down.

lol Ol' Joyce and the girls huh? lol It's funny you would mention her because she gave a young, teenaged Dallas Austin his break in the industry and he went on to .......yadda yadda TLC, yadda. You know the rest.

Not really. They were technically the only superstar girl group of the '90s unless you count TLC but TLC came as a different type of group. SWV kinda tried to compete with TLC but had En Vogue voices (well kinda lol).

CoCo had a voice them other chicks were just frontin'. And En Vogue were pretty. SWV not so much.

Taj had a decent voice. LeLe wasn't horrible either. However, every group needs a "voice" and Coko was the true voice of the group.

Taj did sing lead on "It's All About U."

I find it amazing how influential and respected En Vogue were after basically falling off after only two (hugely successful) albums. After that they started to replace members and stuff just got sloppy.

There's only two albums with other members. Dawn is on EV3, but quit before it was released. That's why she isn't on the cover photos. But you can hear her voice on the songs. It's like Jermaine Jackson & Bobby Brown leaving the J5 & New Edition right after albums (Moving Violation, All For Love) were released. Masterpiece Theatre is a trio: Cindy, Terry, and Maxine. After that, Maxine left for a little while. There was a Christmas album (2002) with Amanda Cole, who wasn't in the group long. Then there was SoulFlower (2004) with Rhona Bennett, which is their last album to date. In 2005, the original 4 got together and sang on So What The Fuss by Stevie Wonder and also appeared in the video. They've been performing since then. They recently recorded some songs, but Dawn didn't participate in the recordings even though she still performs in concert with En Vogue. Dawn said the record contract was bad, so didn't sign. Last I heard the other three are trying to get out of the record deal. So nothing has been released, although one of the new tunes was played on a radio station somewhere.

I really think that record labels were not really trying to pit the groups against each other in the 90s, but were trying have different angles on the groups.

En Vogue was more like classy models. SWV were more like hood girls with class. TLC were a combination of sexy, hood and beauty. Then you also had other groups like Blackgirl, For Reel, Xscape, etc. that all had similar concepts, but none of them were close to En Vogue in my book.

Yeah, the only song that features Dawn is "Don't Let Go." They had to go in and redo the leads on different trax after she left.

I don't think it was completely dead. It definitely could have been revived if Dawn hadn't been such a "diva" and if the other 3 had not gone back to Thomas and Denzel for Masterpiece Theater. Instead of them continuing to grow as a group, they went backwards to 1989 and it didn't work at all.

I remember meeting EV when EV3 came out and I asked about Dawn. They all seemed pretty much "done" as a group. It just seemed like they were together for contractual purposes.

Dawn can clearly be heard on several of the other songs like Let It Flow and Knocking On Heaven's Door and also the B-side song It's About Love. Her voice wasn't removed.

What is Dawn's issue? every time you turn around, she is always about some drama

SWV was bland as hell. VH! soul devoted an hour to their videos and how they blew up amazes me-they can't dance, none of them have any charisma at all. Even in their new song, co sign, no presence at all.

I said leads, not the background. If I'm not mistaken, she is listed as background vocals on the album.

I don't know, but almost everyone that works with her has drama. Raphael Saadiq also said he would never work with her again either.

I misunderstood your comment. smile I thought you were saying she wasn't on the album at all other than the one song. On Let It Flow, Dawn has 2 or 3 lines in the middle of the song.

To me TLC was their only competition. EnVogue would've lasted alot longer if Dawn didnt leave the group. I didnt like them as a trio. TLC sold alot more records but vocally couldnt touch EnVogue. Both groups had crossover appeal and will always be fan favorites. I tend to think 'Destiny's Child' modeled themselves after EnVogue.

Thank Teddy Riley, Brian Alexander Morgan, Pharell Williams and Missy Elliott for why they had hits...

That is why they were called Sisters With Voices. They were not supposed to be known for anything but thier voices. I guess it worked in a way.

I agree with you. I could hear that they were pretty much done with Fan Mail. Not to mention, Left Eye had started doing side projects and was ready to go solo.

Years ago I remember seeing Dawn on Jay Leno. Her hair was raggedy and she practically had her implanted tits hanging out. She looked like a slut straight off the Vegas strip but you could tell she looked in the mirror a few minutes prior and yelled "BANGIN!" She thought she was too cute.

No. And I kind of resent them for being so damned good. Those women formed my opinions of what a great female vocal group should be. I just cannot connect with today’s soul/R&B/etc. because En Vogue showed me what real talent and ability looks and sounds like.

I agree. And not only did they have the talent, they all were sexy as well, but it wasn't skanky at all. It was classy sexy. They were the type of women I admired and wanted to exhibit that same type of sexiness when I got older. The "Never Gonna Get It", "Giving Him Something He Can Feel", "Lies" as well as "Give It Up, Turn It Loose" videos are all my favorites and exhibit that sexiness that I'm describing. Now I was in high school when Destiny's Kids came out...and no I didn't want to be like them.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.
