You have a good point about the tale being apparently well known. I do remember though Mac's explanation even from years ago - back when he had his own variety show and some pop & country hits of his own - he was probably asked about it a lot. My dad took me to a Davis concert back then and he probably even talked about it there, he was really a chatterbox hence the variety show.

^^I've never checked out for Mac Davis like that. I listened to some of his music, but that's about it. He wasn't someone I've seen written about in magazines or saw on TV other than music programs. I saw him in a few movies, like the one about football that I don't remember the name of right now. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I think he did movies with Burt Reynolds. Not familiar with that show Barry wrote for. Was it a show in the 70's? Just Music-No Categories-Enjoy It!

I don't know about that. Jerry Reed has made several movies with Burt.
Banana Splits was a kids show that came on Saturday mornings in the 1970's. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. ^^Yeah, that's the movie. It used to get shown on TV all the time, back when they had VHF/UHF and the channels went off at night.
