Elvis Presley ~ Burning Love {Viva Elvis version}

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Ok concept, but the original is the SH*T. I'd wish they'd do another Guitar Man album they did back in the 80's: http://www.elvispresleymu...sions.html

^^What was that mix for? A movie? Before I played it, I was thinking "When did Elvis start making 15 minute songs?". lol

So it's like that album Motown released in 1984 by Michael Jackson called Farewell My Summer Love. Except that the Mike songs were previously unreleased.

Yes, but some of the songs are not as good, but some of it sounds refreshing to hear. 13 out of the 20 are really good.

I like these remixes from a few years ago.

Not a big fan of Viva Elvis as delivered (album or show). That track's not bad but there's not enough propulsion from the band imo. My fave there is easily Bossa Nova Baby.

This is the original. The Beatles also remade one of Arthur's songs called Anna.

It came out in 1972, but was released a few months before Elvis' version. Maybe Elvis heard Arthur's version and decided to record it. That's what happened with In The Ghetto and Only The Strong Survive.

Brook Benton wrote survive right? Elvis killed it too. His voice was amazing on that record "Elvis In Memphis" Is a treasure that everyone should own. The thing about Elvis he made it his own.

I'm not sure, but I think Gamble & Huff wrote it. I know it's not Brook though. Jerry Butler released it first.

I just looked it up and it was written by all 3: Butler, Gamble, & Huff.

What?

Mac Davis, songwriter of In The Ghetto -

"It was put to me that Elvis wanted to record some new stuff. He was inspired after the success of Memories and the TV show and all that. They wanted to see if I had anything for him. I went into the studio and cut a tape of every song I had that hadn't been recorded, just guitar and vocals. It had 19 songs on there... Two of the songs on that tape became hits for Elvis, Don't Cry Daddy and In The Ghetto."

Mac recorded it first as a demo and Elvis heard it. In The Ghetto was actually written for Sammy Davis Jr., not Elvis.

Mac was the balladeer for the last Dukes Of Hazzard (original cast) movie in 2000. It was kinda weird though because they showed Mac narrating, when Waylon Jennings was never shown on the show or the 1st reunion movie. Instead of just doing the voiceover, Mac would just appear out of nowhere to describe the action.

Geez you guys. smile JB, I'm okay with replying to what Micky actually wrote. cool

Also on Ghetto, I'll go with what the oft-interviewed songwriter songwriter says, including in my previous link that Elvis didn't just happen to hear the demo, Mac made the demo specifically for Elvis (which is entirely different than 'wrote the song for' to which the answer is, nobody in particular).

http://www.americansongwr...d-sinker/

I’d heard you first pitched “In The Ghetto” to Sammy Davis Jr.

No. That song was pitched to Sammy after Elvis had cut it. He eventually went on to

record it. But Bill Medley has never lived down turning that song down.

http://smashinginterviews...-and-elvis

Is it true you first pitched the song to Sammy Davis Jr.?

That’s not true. I took it to Sammy later. I was trying to get an artist of color to do

the song because I thought it was an important song. Back in my little stupid head I

thought that it was something an African-American artist should record. I took it to

Sammy later on. but Elvis had already recorded it. 1969 was a good year.

^^I've never seen those interviews, they're fairly recent. The Sammy story has been told for decades, so I guess it's well known enough for the interviewers to ask about it. I've never heard anything about Bill Medley though.
